4 HD or 1 HD? - Page 2

If it is running 24/7 I would say just do the 1tb drive. The energy savings and heat are my reasons behind that.

Now, if your server needs to fulfill the needs of more than a few workstations simultaneously, i would go for a larger array.

I'd go for some of the new Western Digital Green Power RE2 drives (WD7501AYPS - not WD7500AYPS). Low power usage, low heat, and high durability - what more could you ask for?

Best price around - I bought 2 already for my server:

Oh yeah my case is a SONATA II also, so the Hard drives will be close together... and the "fan near the hard drive is a really crappy position.

Any more opinions? I'm kinda leaning towards teh 1TB though and maybe a 320GB also for the OS and then my new comp (antec 900) will have 640gb with raid 5 =/ and way better cooling lol

The four drives would be much more expensive thou. But then you have 4x the read/write speed. If price was not a factor i would go 4x320GB.

I would go for a RAID 1 configuration made up of two 1TB drives. This would make for less heat, less energy, and it would be a lot safer; that is exactly what you want in a server.

Very good way to look at it, if he had the money.
I would say 4x320gb drives.

oh i have 4x320s right now and going to buy a 1tb not 2..

the question is about heat now.... i know 4x320 is better because of raid-5 and redundancy but it will be much hotter too

those are my current temps. 1 more will most likely be 40 C and tehy will be about 1 cm or so apart from eachother. its a SONATA II case so its not very big.

Sorry killoverme, I looked and seen the a900 and thought that was what you were going to use. I looked at the sonata ii and is there not an option for a front mounted fan? There is not much room like you said for much in this case but right now your temps are pretty good. I think mine were about 5C more when I had a cheaper case and they were pretty warm to the touch. This is one good thing about the antec 900, the front fans, my three drive temps are 32/29C

yeah thats why i'm wondering if i should... they are pretty warm

Maybe see what you can do for placing a fan blowing on them. That will lower the temps pretty good. maybe one under and blowing upwards, what about under the bezel in front of the drives? There should be one there but it looks like it might not do much good with the drive cage blocking all that air flow.
