Black Screen When Running STALKER SoC

Thread Starter
I just bought STALKER Shadow of Chernobyl last night for $5 from Steam. It downloaded and installed last night, and when I tried to run it this morning, here's what happens:

The game launches and I hear all the game sounds. However, my screen is completely black and the power LED on my monitor blinks - going from the normal green light to no light and back to the normal green light over and over. I have keyboard control, as I can alt tab back to a normal Vista desktop, and can even alt F4 out of the game.

I doubled checked that I have directX10 installed and updated my catalyst drivers to 8.12. Nothing has helped, same problem. Does anyone have any ideas? I'm wondering if maybe the install is bad? The video card is not overclocked, and CS Source continues to operate normally.

Right click the game in steam, properties, local files, verify game cache. That will make sure you've got all the right pieces. SOC uses DX7-9 BTW, not 10

Another thing you might try is bringing your processor back to stock settings. It's a long shot, but I know that the game hates any OC. If, when you do get it going, it randomly crashes a lot, it's definitely because of the OC.

I think I've decided this game is not worth my time haha. For $5 it was worth a peek, I'm not messing with a perfectly stable overclock and driver settings to try out a game that appears to be riddled with bugs from what I've been reading online. I had already tried verifying the files by the way, everything checked out. Oh well, thanks for the help.

It's not riddled with bugs, they're a feature of the game lol. Bugs taken into account, these games are the best right after HL2.

Keep in mind that a lot of what you read online was posted during the "beta" phase of it, in the first few months. The game's still buggy, but I haven't seen anything worse than the occasional C2D and the memory leak it still has. If you have an XP install I'd highly suggest giving it another go on that.

Too bad that you are going to give up. The stalker series is one of my favorites for sure.

I hope you decide to give it another go man. Very worth it in the end.

I bought STALKER SoC on Friday for $5 off of steam as well and I must say, the game is freaking awesome. Its not a typical gun-ho shooter. I got a 4850 and its running fine with me.

PS: game has crashed on me once.. guess the guy with the crashing OC, probably doesnt have a stable OC

I am having the exact same problem. I can't find a solution on this anywhere i've looked all over google. Your the only person i've found that has this same problem but you appear to have given up .

I can start the game fine from Steam, I can hear the audio, but my monitor just says not optimum resolution and shows no video at all. Not sure what this is, i have had no problems w/ any other games I have run on this computer. Please help!! Tell me if you need any more info! TY!!

Go ahead and dont play it. It is your loss entirely. The bad feedback the game got is from before the patches. Yes there were a few bugs, but most of the time they werent game breaking. I played both of the Stalker games the day they came out and saw alot of the bugs you speak of first hand and 99% of it has been patched.

I really cant help you fix it though because Ive never dealt with steam with Stalker. I DID have a similar issue where I started the game and it showed the mouse pointer and had music playing, but just a black screen. Now THAT was fun to figure out. I think it turned out to be my video drivers, but Im not sure.

I have the exact same problem my computer completely stops outputting video and this is the first mention of the exact problem I have found.

I have tried several fixes for problems I don't think I even had is there anyone here who could possibly help those of us that have this problem?
