Need help with Home Network.

Thread Starter
At the moment my setup is so:

INTERNET > MODEM > DI-524 > 5 PC'S

With the current set-up the network suffers from traffic congestion, and it becomes a major pain when gaming or streaming music.

I'm wondering if setting up a custom router somewhere along the line will help me with traffic, and also if my traffic is being restricted by the wireless receiver in my desktop PC (connected via USB).

Thankyou for any help!

What is your up/down speed? What ISP do you have? Chances are that you are running out of bandwidth due to the amount of internet connections on one line.

Yeah I doubt it's the router. I have the same one and can't say the the router has ever caused even the slightest slowdown. Assuming you have a fast enough ISP to not even consider that before asking....

1. Unless you spent a bit, I would first look at your wireless USB. If you got a lower-end one at Best Buy or whatever, it's not going to be screaming fast.

2. What are the other people on the network doing? 5 PCs on a 10mb (for example) connection trying to do more than checking email at the same time can feel slow depending on what everyone is doing. edit: In fact 1 person hogging the upload will kill the speed for everyone real easily.

Majority of the time only 1-2 of the PC's are being used at once. My connection is 1.5Mbps down 512kb up (Sadly one of the fastest available in Aus).Usually other users are just browsing the web.

I say it's the connection. You say the connection and the style of usage hasn't changed in a while, but the bandwidth needed to do all those things has been constantly changing and moving towards needing more bandwidth. Maybe there is something funny going on if one day it was suddenly slow, but 2 businesses and a gamer can use 1.5Mb easily.
