Should my BFG GTX 280 be running at almost 90 degrees? Or is soemthing wrong?

Ok, so i have a BFG GTX 280. When i first got it i messed with it and then did some stress testing in prep of some overclocking.

Using furmark totally stock it ran about ~60c degrees idle

Then after running furmark for a little bit the temps shot up to over ~85c degrees.

Thinking this was high i checked all the fan settings and it was on auto, fan speed kicked up to 100% and it seemed to be working fine. So i then cranked furmark up to 1600x1200 and msaa up to 16x and enabled the stbilitly testing mode.

Ran it again and watched the temps rise to almost 90c degrees. Remember this is totally stock.

So i figured this thing just runs hot, it is a new card, must just be the normal temps.

Started overclocking it, and was surprised when i was only able to get it to 675core/1479 shader/1277 emeory. Seems like it should be able to do more. I also adjusted the auto fan settings and turned my case fans up some and got the temps to basically stay the same overclocked as stock.

But if i try to go ANY higher on anything i start getting MAJOR artifacts.

So i then started looking on the net for other overclocks. I see a lot of people running 700+core, which seems like a better overclock. but they also are running a LOT cooler then mine at 60 - 75 degrees.

So is my card just a dud or is this normal and they are all lucky?

Maybe try reaseating the card's heatsink with some AS5, or at least better than stock thermal paste.

If it's still really high, make sure your card is getting ample airflow. Although I doubt it isn't because you have an antec 900.

My cards run at 700/something/something fine.. With 90% fan speed they idle at 51-48. Load they go at 64-60ish with GTA4 and 68-66 with FC2 maxed with 8xAA.

What can I tell you? Hm.. Open it up, apply some aftermarket thermal paste. RMA it to BFG. Reseat the card maybe? Get some fans on it (Antec SpotCool works great)

My two 8800GT in SLI run at between 52-55C Idle and around 66-71C at Load stable with overclocks. At 90C your card is getting real hot.

1. You can get an aftermarket GPU fan.

2. Use RivaTuner and create fan profiles to cool the GPUs as they increases in temp while gaming (all the way to 100% fan usage after hitting 65C).

3. Mod your case and insert a 120mm fan to exhaust the GPU heat directy out of the case. Refer to my Sig for the Mod instructions.

4. All of the above.

Thought of that but don't want to mess up my warantee. Airflow is not a problem, i have fans stuffed into every corner of my case and on high get some nice airflow. Turning them up or down only changes the card temp by 1 or 2 degrees.

Yeah, that is what i thought mine would run at, both temp and overclock.

Never thought of RMA'ing it. There is nothing "wrong" with it though, it just runs hot, will they RMA it for that?

Exactly my thoughts on reseating it. Will they RMA it for this though?

Fan speed is already at 100%. I adjusted the auto settings so that the fan kicks up to 100% after 70 degrees (since it is FAR to loud to have at 100% all the time).

Well all of that has been done except for a new heatsink on the card which i don't want to do since it voids the warantee and i have not seen a good one for this card yet other then water.

Just tell them it has a defect, and it gets too hot and makes performance slack. Your not able to use the card correctly. They should be able to RMA it. I can't vouch for BFG only eVGA.

You should never HAVE to run the stock fan at 100% to keep it cool, unless you are trying a huge overclock.

I say RMA, and only I suggest that when something is seriously wrong.

Well never really thought of that, might try giving them a call.

Yeah, that is what i thought too. when it was hitting 100% fan stock and still getting almost 90 degrees i thought that was pretty dang hot. Heck i even opened my case up witht he fan at 100% and it only dropped the temp a few degrees. Was still over 85 even like that. If i was to turn the fan down any lower i don't want to think what the temps would do.
