For instance, Adam and Jamie from mythbusters proved it WAS possible to polish a turd. Jamie even said "I can almost see myself in it."

Lapping a chip is the same thing. You arent looking for it to be shiny only, you want it as flat as possible.

OP: Take a razor blade, and put it sharp side down on the part of the cooler that makes contact with the chip. Hold it up to the light. If you can see light between the chip and the razor, it isnt as flat as it could be. If this is the case, you could try to use a high grit paper to make it flat. The key to lapping is to get it flat with the first couple grits. After that, you're just increasing contact between the chip and cooler.
Did you even read what you quoted?

I guess as long as the base is non-flat is it worth it to lap then?

They can handle stock settings of most quads, however if you go to overclock, dont expect the zalman, OR a lapped zalman to even hold up.
Not enough surface area, nor fins, nor heatpipes, and diameter of heatpipes to handle the heat of a quad. A lot comes into play.

Also a week of heat and cool- heat and cool, is needed to cure the AS5 if thats what your using.
Buy some OCZ freeze if you dont want curing time.
$4.99 is what i paid for mine, vs the $9 at radio shack for AS5 lol.

Why does everyone say this? I am using the 9700 on my quad with great results. The ambient in my case is ~30C and my load temps are ~60C w/ Vcore @ 1.3875. Have you had personal experience with the 9700? What are your temps and volts for a comparison?

Any zalman I've ever owned has had a flat surface but I guess there could be a few shoddy ones out there. I would think lapping the cpu would've been more beneficial. Oh, and I've found that at least the zalman 9700 is good to about 1.44vcore on a q6600 before temps become an issue if you have good airflow.

OP- what were you using as your surface?
usually a glass or mirror is used. Hope it wasn't just a workbench, table, or counter top.

I've never lapped, I think spending the time with different ways of applying your thermal paste the best way to find the best temps and is better time spent. Thats how I get such good temps with my xigmatech.

grunion did a comparison of the 9700 and a TRUE. Note that with a lapped TRUE and a 110 CFM Slipstream on a recent build, The Q6700 runs 3.7GHz with 1.42GHz and loads at 54°C.

The 9700 just isn't able to handle higher voltages with quads. Try running 1.42v and see what your temps are.

I can run my quad @1.4375V with a load of 68C. I just don't run it that high 24/7 because I am uncomfortable increasing my volts & temps so much for 200MHz.
