Couple of things to say here:

A. Sins is incredibly fun once you get the hang of it, you should stick in there, I am beta-ing the new expansion currently and starbases are sexy
B. I play CoH online on occasion so you should hit me up on Steam (Kamakazi010654) or AIM (Kamakazi010654) sometime and we can play. Although availability for me during the holidays is kind of hit and miss.
C. As for suggesting something, you pretty much hit everything I was going to say, other than check out some of the mods for M2:TW, some of them basically make it a whole new game

Age of wonders shadow magic

older game but you can find it in bargain bins at stores like eb games

excellent turn based strategy. I still play it with some friends. there is a huge mod community for it as well (age of wonders II heaven)

it supports lan, online play (8 player) and even play by e-mail.

If you're into turn-based, Galactic Civilizations II is great. It's made by Stardock, same poeple who did Sins, but it is much less time-consuming (depending on map size, at least).

The original is a bit old, so you could get it cheap. There have been two expansions, the most recent released this year, but I believe you can get the full set for a decent price (~$50USD).

Edit: I should add, the only downside is no multiplayer support. But the AI is tough enough, and varied.

HOW COULD I FORGET GALCIVII

I have put so many hours into that game, a very solid one it is.

Only issue is the OP he doesn't like it when battles come down to dice rolls, which is does, literally

I suggestion Supreme Commander. I don't like playing it so much for the "ranked" games, but the custom games are a blast, especially with friends.

Not a particularly new game, and virtually unnoticed, but I've had hours of fun playing Praetorians.
