Advice on computer build on budget.

Thread Starter
I have been pretty out of the loop as far as new hardware goes. Build has a budget of $325. Its to be a balance between general processing power and gaming. For the $325 he needs a CPU, video card, and motherboard. I was thinking:

Phenom 9600 quad core $120
9800GT $115
No idea on mother board.

All suggestion welcome and the budget has no flex room. Thanks in advance.

Ya and unless he is video editing/programming/intense photoshopping/etc... the e5200 will be better than the 9600 especially once overclocked.

And you can upgrade to Deneb when it comes out.

Currently there is no reason for him to go quad core for gaming. However that 9600 has been known to hit 3 Ghz, which is quite nice.

It will be used for processor intensive tasks. I was figuring the quad would be a good balance considering how insanely cheap it is. How does the 9600 quad compare to say a Q6600?

Not even close especially once overclocked, but like the guy above me stated he could always upgrade to Deneb if he goes the AMD route, which at the moment is looking pretty good compared to core i7.

The Conroe will be a faster clock for clock. However there have been reports that some of the newer ones don't OC as far as the older ones. YMMV. Now another member may or may not verify this but I have come across it being discussed more than once.

As you may or may not know, AMD has been playing catch up to Intel. They are releasing 45 nm Phenom II in less than a month which are looking to be very solid performing chips. The is of the 65 nm process, Phenom I. The 9600 may OC to 3.0Ghz. Or it may not OC more than 100 mhz. But maybe OC beyond 3.0 Ghz. Luck of the barrel mister.

This is a little over budget($375), but it would give you a decent graphics solution and if you have a good cpu cooler and case cooling a 4Ghz Dual core.

Sorry, I forgot to mention it in the first post but this computer isn't going to be overclocked its not for me and the recipient simply is not interested in it.
