New rig too hot?? - Page 2

Thread Starter
hey all i'm back after playing sometime with my new stuff. i thought of giving up on the temp issue coz the only option available is to not use the system. I also got my MSI 9800GTX+ OC 512MB but cannot use till my Antec NP 550 arrives in around 3 weeks. so here i am.

Can you guys tell me a good starting point on OC'ng my sig rig. il be grateful if sumone can tell me in detail about all these parameters. specially i have no clue about the FSBRAM. How far will my ram go. what will be the optimum setting? Hope u guys can get me started

Thanks a lot!

Get the Xigmatek S1283 with the bolt thru kit

That will make your temperatures PLUMMET.

Also consider some Arctic Silver 5 or Artic Cooling MX-2

I also just bought a rig similar to yours.

Try for 3.4ghz like mine.

Don't mess with ANY voltages as of yet.

Set your ram to 5-5-5-15 800mhz manually, so it doesn't auto switch or anything

Now you should see something like CPU clock, CPU frequency or something, play with that till it shows it's going to run at 3.4ghz

After that mess with the CPU ratio thing. What this does is overclock your RAM with a ratio to the CPU, mess with that until its about 800

Don't overclock until you get the cooler I provided above

you will want to get your temps corrected before you do any type of overclocking. Buy some Thermal Paste (Arctic Silver 5, MX2, OCZ Freeze) and clean off the cheap thermal stuff off the cooler and replaced it with that.

If you want to overclock i would also suggest getting an aftermarket heatsink like the Arctic Freezer 7 Pro, Xigmatek S1283, OCZ Vendetta2, Thermalright Ultra Extreme 120, Noctua U12, or anything other than the stock heatsink. Heat is the enemy and will hold you back from a lot of things as well as damage your CPU.

have you tried reseating the stock cooler? You shouldn't be getting those super high temps even with a stock cooler. With stock cooling you should be getting load temps at stock settings under 60C

Yes...but like others have said, it'll be okay at those temps, but you really need an aftermarket cooler before you start messing with the clock speeds

QFT, the pushpin mounting system on the stock intel cooler is notorious for not engaging properly, I can't stress enough that you need to physically check all four pushpins to ensure they are correctly engaged.
