Temp problems on Q9550

Thread Starter
Hi all,

I read on this forum fantastic stories about massive overclocking up to 4 Mhz. I descided to try this.
i have a Inten Q9550 on a P5Q3 Deluxe asus board.
when i up the FSB from 333 to 400 i reach a 3400 Mhz quite easily
the system seems to be stable, since i never crash in windows or even in games like GTA IV and Far cry II

however if i run Prime 95 the systems reaches the tjmax of 100c in less than 2 minutes.

I have a Thermalright SI-128 SE cooler installed as a replacement for the poor intel stock cooler. There's a fan running at 1000 rpm blowing down in the cooler and two other coolers running at 1500 rpm that suck air into the case.

How do you guys manage to reach such a low temps as reported in your posts.

Is there something wrong with my system?

Thanks for any reply

do you not have any exhaust fans?

and what kind of fan do you have on your cooler.

you can try reseating the cooler, maybe its not making full contact

I have a nexus fan blowing down in the heatsink at 1000 rpm
i used arctic silver thermal past while seating the heatsink
i just undid my oc settings. now my core temps are around 55c running prime95 for 5 mins.

this is still quite hot compared to your oc temps.

reseating the heatsink is something i could do, but how do i know it's done wrong the first time? What can go wrong?

It might be your CPU's thermal sensor. The new 45nm chip's thermal sensors can sometimes be "stuck" and not report correct temps. I am using a P5Q-Deluxe myself, and when I popped in a E8500, it reported temps way above (although not quite that high) what it should have been.

I hate to tell you one way or the other since I don't fully know your setup, but it could also be that your heatsink is not mounted correctly. But having said that, you should probably look into getting a higher flow fan, like around 2000rpm or so.

No way that your temps should be that high, at 3.4Ghz.

What BIOS are you using anyway?

the sensor not reporting properly could be a possibility.
i would reseat the heatsink just in case.
what program do you use to check your temps anyways?

i use coretemp version 0.99.3
I'll reseat my heatsink just to try that out
what should i do with the thermal paste? a small quantity, or some more
what is the best way to apply it?

i tried just now to turn my fan around. Now it's sucking air through the heatsink. My temps got a 5c lower then before (50 instead of 55)
that's on 2.83Ghz 333 fsb while running prime95 for 10 mins now

i just put a line down the middle of my heatsink with the thermal paste and then put it down, the pressure on the cpu should spread it out.

nice, i have my Panaflo fan blowing air through my TRUE and luckily the air goes straight to my exhaust fan so it blows all the hot air direclty out.

Use realtemp and set TJmax too 100

The termal paste needs to fill the Q9550 so dont use too small quantity of it.I have used zalman thermal paste and it came with a brush
