Neither if you can, you should at least try to find a 16 cache HDD, since that makes a decent amount of difference.

You didnt mention the 250 Gb in your text, but that one seems like it would be a decent one to use based on its size and some of the same characteristics as that 80 gb.

the thing is I have to use either the 200gb or the 2 80gbs as it's all I have and I have no money to get a new HDD. The 250gb is being used for files and music so it can't be used either.

So which is faster ? that 200gb or 2x 80gb in raid0?

I would go for the 200gb. The reliabiility of RAID is not really worth it with the (old) 80gb drives IMO.
But that being said, the RAID setup would probably give you better speeds.

I think I may end up trying both and seeing what speed I get...what benchmark tool should I use to test which is fastest?

2x80. I personally have never had any reliability issues with RAID0 (my array is probably going to take a dump on me right after I post this, LOL).

The drives being SATA vs. SATAII won't really matter--platter hard drives can't even transfer constantly at SATA speeds (except MAYBE velociraptors or scsi, but scsi is a different interface anyway), let alone SATAII--SATAII is more important to have on your motherboard. You'll be lucky if a single 80GB HDD transfers around 75MB/s--which is well under SATA's interface bandwidth.

Regarding the benchmarking, I use HDTach--works for raid and non-raid hd's. I even benchmarked my microSD flash card, LOL--whopping 7MB/s!

On HD tune I was getting burst speeds of about 100 but in hd tach I was getting over 200...which is right?
