Intel Q9550 Overclocking and more...

Thread Starter
Hi i am new here..
At the beginning i want you to see my specs:

CPU: Intel Core Quad Q9550 2,83 GHz ( Revision C1)
Motherboard: Asus P5QL Pro
Memory: 4 GB GEIL Dual Channel ( 2x2GB GEIL Black Dragon 1066 CL5 ) ( stock voltage from 2.2 to 2.4)
Graphic: EVGA GeForce GTX 280 (passive + active cooling)
OS: Windows Vista 64-bit
Power Supply: Coller Master 700W+

I am not a pro, jus normal user.
But i want to overclock "something" My goal is to overclock CPU and GPU, but firstly i want to talk only about CPU.

I need information how can i overclock this cpu on my board. I mean, what to do with voltages, what to do witch ram (i read about 1:1 ratio?) and other parametrs, like pci lock at 100, turn off speedsteping etc. I read about this but it was so many different pages, forums...it is all messed up in my head.

The important thing is, i dont want extreme overclock! For me, 3.2 GHz will be OK, but if there is a way to get 3.4Ghz it will be great!

Welcome! Fill in your system specs so people can find them.

Read the overclocking guide in the sticky and the various other threads on your motherboard and CPU here.

Once you've filled in your missing specs (like CPU cooler) then maybe we can come up with some more specific advice. You could wind up with an OC anywhere from 3.4 to 4.0.

Ok i filled up specs. About max temp of cpu - its after 20 min of running prime95 torture stress.

I dont want to overclock so high ( more than 3.4 ) and besides i think overclocking to 3.4 will be easier, its not so extreme.

Any ideas?

There's a search box on the upper right of the screen. Go to the Intel section and do a search for Q9550, but also keep an eye out for your motherboard listing as well. The best option would be to find something with your chip AND your motherboard, as they work together when overclocking. You're going to need better cooling if you're going to overclock very far at all. I doubt that stock cooling would be good enough to reach 3.4GHz.

Yep, I wouldn't even try to OC at all with the stock cooler, though some people tempt fate and do it. Once you've replaced it (and maybe read a few things) then you'll be much better set to get a stable and safe OC.

Any ideas about what cooler should i buy ?

Ps. I found some settings for oc my cpu:
Set CPU Frequency (FSB) to 400.
Set DRAM Frequency to 800.
Set PCI Express Frequency to 100.
PCI Clock Synchronization to 33.33.
Set the mem voltage.

I wouldn't recommend anything but the TRUE.

Agreed. The TRUE scales very well with voltage increases, which makes it a far better cooler than most reviews and benchmarks show it to be.

The TRUE is great but it's also quite expensive, especially because you need to purchase a fan as well.

The Sunbeamtech Core Contact Freezer is far better bang/buck in my opinion...but if you want the best, get the TRUE

Another great cooler for the price is the xigmatek.

With some nice OC'ing and stress testing my cpu temps were NEVER an issue.
