Is the E6600 or the E7300 stock Intel cooler better? - Page 2

You are not missing anything, they are making the Heatsinks smaller since the chips at stock don't put out much heat. I would use that e6600 cooler even if there was no OCing.

Thats what i thought but it is SOOO much smaller i figured i had to be missing something.

So the E6600 is the one i will be using.

I actually have 2 or 3 more laying around here, good to know for any future builds.

For a manufacture to include an inadequate cooler would be foolish. That being said since everything is larger then the stock e7300 you will only be doing it good using e6600 cooler. I wouldn't be surprised if you can get it above 3.0 on stock voltage and still keep things cool.

Well i actually messed with it just now and was able to get it up to 3.35 at stock voltage and it ran mamtest for a little bit without any problems. much past that though and it would not post without boosting the voltage.

So i took it back down to 3.0 and will let it run a full memtest like that and see what happens. temps idle are fine at mid 40's and that is 20 mins into it, it should come down some more after it breaks in.

Going to install windows later and them will prime test it and see what the temps do.

So far 3.0 looks to be a nice stable overclock.

Well it looks like 2.9ghz is the magic number. 3.0 works fine with ram at ddr750 but it I bump it up to the next ratio (works out to ddr900) then i get a few errors in memtest.

Drop the cpu down to 2.9 and the ddr drops to 870 and completes memtest fine. so i am installing windowns now and will then stress test it from there.

Temps in the bios are still in the mid 40's, so all looks good so far. Will report back after proper stress testing.

Yep, 2.9 looks like the magic number, been running prime for 30 mins without any problems.

This heatsink also seems to be a very good choice. Temps in realcore are running mid 30's idle and low 50's in prime.

That is cooler then my computer with a core contact heatsink and an antec 900 case!

So if anyone has a 45nm chip, you can use a 65nm heatsink that will allow for some mild to mid level overclocking and still have temps well under control

Nicely done. I'm also jealous that my stock cooler doesn't have a copper 'quarter' on the bottom, just plain ol' aluminum.

Meh, none of my CPU's in the last ten years have ever seen their stock coolers.

Well my quad core 45nm chip did have a copper base, guess they need it.

Ditto that here. For the last few years i have used zalman heatsinks and had great luck with them. this time i decided to go with something differnt for my computer and got the core contact.

And in the case of my moms computer, i just plain didn't see the need to buy another heat sink when it came with one.
