Please help overclock my 4850

Thread Starter
I just got my new video card.. its a POWERCOLOR Radeon HD 4850 1GB DDR3.

Idle Temp: 45-48
Default Clock: 665MHz
Default Memory: 950 MHz x 2 = 1900..

Using a stock fan that came with the GPU, i overclocked it using CCC..

Clock to 670MHZ
Memory to 1000 x2 = 2000..
Manually set fan speed to 100% all the time in CCC also.. (really not sure if this is bad or good?)

It's a very small overclock, don't want to break it ;x.
I used Furmark(Using Vista64, didnt have problems using it) for 30 minutes to test, there was no artifacts..
Temp went up to 78C..
I know Furmark is one of those programs that really makes your Video Card so hot.. but i didn't know what else to use, should i try ATI-TOOL ?

Whats the max temp for HD4850 ?

should i go for more?

Ah come on. Go farther than that. Use ATITool instead, use the "scan for artifacts" thing. It'll be a cube sitting still, NOT the one moving. If there is any yellow spots, back off, those are artifacts.

Also, please don't post the same thread twice.

You can just auto-tune the card in CCC and then run ATItool to see if it artifacts, which if it does back it down 10 or so till it doesnt.

He is at 78c, don't tell him to go any further than that

In my experience, auto-tune does not work very well.
Personally, I use the AMD GPU clock tool.

What revision of Powercolor HD4850 do you have?
Did you get one of the newer versions with a dual-slot cooler, or do you only have one of the early versions with the very small single-slot cooler? Judging by your temps, I'd say single slot, in which case you should problably look into an aftermarket VGA cooler if you want to get much higher than that.

I wouldn't go much above 78c, way too hot for my liking, I try to keep it below 60c. With my Thermaltake Duorb, I get 57c (according to GPU-Z) under 100% load (GPU2 folding) clocks at 650/1000. (not a huge OC, but like I said I like to keep my temps low.)

Oh, and it is nice to see a fellow Code Geass fan here

Thread Starter
thanks for the replies, i have this video card: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814131123

Right now i set the clock to 675, memory still 1000 in CCC
using ATI TOOL Artifact Testing atm..
Temp: 68-69C
Activity: 97% (Why isn't this 100%?)
Fan: Manually set it to 100% in CC - i am not sure if its alright to set fanspeed to 100% always, is it fine ?

EDIT: Artifacts 2 pixel found at 24 minutes :/

Redmist: Furmark program makes video card temp go high so fast, that's why mine was 78.. but using ATI TOOL its 68-69. Should i try AMD GPU clock tool instead? and We only need to artifact test in ATI TOOL for 30 minutes right ? lol Code Geass ftw.. too bad its ended

DeckerDontPlay: I don't trust auto-tune, i did it before and gave me like 1150 Memory, and 700 Core.. then i went to try Crysis.. i saw green artifacts.. exited reseted to older problem gone lol.

Weirdo: Sorry..

Yes, manually setting the fan speed to 100% and leaving it like that is fine.

I think that is about your limit, when I tried to OC, 675 and 1000 gave me a few artifacts too. Try dropping the core to 670, and see if that takes care of those artifacts.

You can try AMD GPU clock tool if you want, though its basically just for setting clocks, it doesn't check for artifacts for you or anything. I usually just set the clocks in AMD GPU clock tool, use GPU-Z to monitor temps, and just fire up a game and see how long I can stay stable and see if my temps are too high (its really nice having a second screen so I can just glance over at GPU-Z )
