For OS Velociraptor will own... But games...
Games like cache so a 1tb 32mb cache would do just a good

My Samsung Spinpoint 1TB does exactly what I need... Work. :-) I haven't had an issue so far. It's quite compared to my RaptorX by a long shot. After all is said and done you get about 930GB out of a 1TB drive.

i am running a 300gb velociraptor and a 1tb spinpoint like you said earlier in my main gaming rig. at the time i bought those drives, they were about the same price and i needed the big drive to put all of my stuff on, and raiding 2 velociraptors would not have been enough storage.

i am in the process of building another system, and i decided to go with a raid 0 array of 1tb drives. i bought two 5400rpm samsung ecogreeens, and i am getting the same performance i was getting from the velociraptor, but with upwards of 6 times the storage capacity. these ecogreens also run much cooler and are much quieter than my WD, and i expect them to last longer due to the lower temps and slower rotation. the only problems with the samsung drives is mediocre compatibility with nforce chipsets, so i'd reccomend the 3 platter WD greenpower drive if you plan to get a nvidia board.

run a couple of these in raid and you wont be disappointed:

edit:
here is my hdtune AT 64K block size:

thats with two of them in stripe on an AMD SB750. im toying with the idea of buying two more since they are down to $85.

I just got one of the Hitachis from Newegg. It was DOA. I should have spent a few more bucks for the WD.

Yep I have it as a storage drive and works with no problems.

640GB C:/ + 640GB (or 1TB) D:/ drive.

That's why I'm replacing one of my 80GB drives with a 250, and getting a 2nd 640. I need the space, and even though the 640 is far faster, I don't want to put data on it.

Yea I have a 320 GB HDD WD blue edition and a 1TB black edition. I have the 320 split 3 ways one for VISTA, one for XP, and one for probably windows server 2008(got it for free being a student, wanna try it out.)or I will put OSX on it. I tried Ubuntu. I booted into it probably 6 times out of the 3 months I had it installed. Needless to say, it was a waste of a partition for me.

Gonna try OSX or Server 2008. Most likely 2008 or server 2003 since network plus exam requires you to know how to do stuff in it.

But I've formatted my main 320 many times and don't worry about transferring data because my OSes and programs are set to automatically put everything on the terabyte. You just need to change a registry key or two to get windows to automatically save everything on a separate HDD.

The way I have it set up is I made a Folder names OS on the terabyte. Inside that folder I have 2 one labeled xp and one vista. from that point on I make a program files folder to make windows keep it organized as if it were on the main drive.
