Overclocked Q6600 @ 3.51GHz Idle Temperature = 45 ?

I must admit, very much impressed by the overclockability of Q6600 Thanks to the P5Q Deluxe which unlocks the mulitpler and allows x6, x7, x8 and x9. Bus Speed is holding at 390MHz gives me a FSB of 1560MHz, RAM is doing 5-5-5-18. The system is completely stable with a single Sapphire HD 3850. Lesson learnt from having a bad power supply so now I have deployed Cosair TX750W which is ATi certified for even a later upgrade to HD 4870 X2.

Playing Battlefield which is my favourite game is so much fun now, I don't need to worry about stuttering and laggy frame rates. Can't believe this game is now doing at 99FPS @ 1024X768 most of the time even on large map. It is a good benchmark game which is both CPU and GPU demanidnn in my own view. Compared to Call of Duty 5 or COD World at War, which is less than 50FPS at 1280X768, I wonder if this game is GPU bounded given Q6600@3.5 is quite a performing CPU. Could anyone suggest any improvement I can do to get more FPS out fo this game?

My major problem right now is the Idle temperature which is holding at 43~46 varies at each core. Is this idle temperature of an overclocked Q6600 normal? I heard that any chipsets which is hearted up to above 45 degree celsius will have its lifespan shorten to 1 year or 1 year and a half at the most, anyone can suggest me with a cooling solution apart from water coolant?

Thanks!

You could try cleaning off the thermal paste and reseating the heatsink. That does seem high to me,but it's under load that's important, what are your load temps while stressing or gaming? As for a cooler I would recommend the Xigmatek S1283(excellent for the price) or the TRUE(A bit more expensive but is best on the market IMO).What cooler are you using now?

Yep, fill in the rest of your system specs. It would be embarrassing if we recommended the cooler you already have!

I am also using a P5Q-Deluxe and Q6600, and with my 1.2375 VID chip, I am at 3.87Ghz at 1.4275v with load line calibration on. My temps are 30c idle and 57c load. It would help if you posted your heatsink solution. I am using Thermalright 120x.

Ah, the venerable TRUE. What have you got for a fan on that thing?

I am using two Silverstone FM121 in Push/Pull config, max fan speed (110CFM). I think the fan speed is like 2400 rpm. It's a bit loud, but I like the temps, and I've gotten used to the noise.

I also lapped the TRUE and the CPU, and did the "washer mod".

Well that does me no good. My fan pushes 110CFM and it's quieter. Slightly.

Hi folks,

Good to have people who has pretty much the saem configuration as mine actually to help me with this temperature crisis!

I am currently using stock heatsink for both the CPU and GPU. Yesterday I tested the system for the whole day, playing Battlefield 2, Call of Duty World at War, Strike Fighter Project 1 and I used HWMonitor, Core Remp 0.99 to monitor the temperature. According to HWMonitor, the maximum temperature of the 4 cores at time were 66 degree Celsius. As for the GPU, at one stage the aximum was 79 degree Celsius.

At idle, the CPU cores were all around 38~41, core #1 is always the highest!

Hey GoHigh, I see you are using Thermaltake Ultra 120 Xtreme, what do you reckon about Thermaltake True Copper? Would you anticipate that it will bring 5 to 6 degrees down?

Also 1 silly question about the temperature. I checked the various temperatures upon bootup, it reported in the BIOS CPU 21 degree Celsius where the motherboard is osme 36 degree Celsius. After logging into Windows, I used CoreTemp 0.99 to monitor the temperature and it reported 36 degree Celsius as the cores' temperature. Can I trust CoreTemp?

I like TRUE Cu, but dang... It really seems heavy to me. I am curious to try it, but two things have kept me from doing it.

1. All copper means chance of corrosion in the long haul. I live in Tennessee, and during the summers, it gets to be like 90% humidity around here. And since my case is pumping through so much air, I wonder how it will hold up. I lapped my TRUE to the copper base, and it has already discolored.

2. It weighs like 1.9Kg or something. I am using Antec 1200, so the only way to mount is vertically. I have read that even Thermalright recommends horizontal mounting solution for this beast. Maybe I can give it a support using some wires or something so that weight won't put so much stress on my mobo, but dang... That's really heavy.

Plus, no I don't think it will shave another 5-6c down from my current temps. Most test have shown that it will bring about 2-3c down, but right now, that won't be enough to get any higher OC for me. I really need to go H20, and I am shopping.

Those are awesome temps using your STOCK HEATSINK btw.

GoHigh,

I have finally decided on ASUS Silent Knight II. I know it is not a brilliant compared to Thermaltake Ultra 120 Extreme or True Copper, but the problem I am getting is my case

.

The case comes with a tray which contains the motherboard tray

And it practically cuts away almost 50mm of width from its 225mm leaving only 175mm for the CPU socket and the heatsink. Most of Thermaltake hardcore heatsink are 160mm tall. It is impossible to accomodate these heatsink. To cut the deal, I comprimise for another brand and I only find Silent Knight II a better alternative.

Here are some official screenies of the device:

I have not installed it yet, because I need to remove my motherboard (hate doing that!). Shall post the result back when all done.

GoHigh, since you have the same motherboard as mine, I like to share some BIOS work with you. Hacen't you noticed that in the BIOS, there is a setting known as SpeedStep? I have noticed that having this parameter enabled, the system adjust the multiplier and thus the CPU speed automatically, like at idle, the multiplier remains as x6 and FSB @ 266 giving me 1600MHz CPU speed. The cores temperature hover around 24,25,26,27. Room temperature is around 20 degree though. Have you used this feature?
