E4500 @ 3ghz time to upgrade?

Thread Starter
I was thinking about getting a Q9550 and a new full tower case then calling it the day for quite some time. Is Intel planning to release any new socket 775 chips in 09? What about any news on price drops on the current lineup?

Sounds like a good plan! I don't think Intel will release any more 775's, but they will still be on the market for some time! You can also consider a E8500/E8600! They are better in most games (and they clock sky high). I had a Q6600 @ 3.6ghz before, and I liked the my E8500 and my current E8600 much better!

I don't think it will be to long till the price drops come (maybe January?)

You have a few options.
Wait for I7 price drop
Wait for Denab
Go Intel now with a Q9550, Q6600, or an E8400.

I went for the 3rd option. New rig will be here Wednesday

Have you given any thought to bumping up the CPU a bit higher, maybe 400+ FSB? At 3.0 the CPU is still a slight bottleneck.

I have tried to get past 3ghz with this chip but it seems not to fair too well. I may try a 400+ FSB and see what happens. But I really don't know If I can get a cpu clock higher than 3ghz. From what I have read a higher FSB doesnt really yield much improvement over the same cpu clock with a lower FSB. Unless I'm wrong?

Well a little update I managed to get my E4500 at 3.2ghz. It took quite a bit of volts though to get it stable. This board has some crazy vdroop.

1.54375 vcore in bios
1.504v idle
1.488v under load

idle temps are 30-33c. Load temps are a bit high. After running prime95 for about a hour I get temps around 70-72c. Intel burn test i'm pushing 85c. Yikes.

I'm not too sure if I'm going to keep this oc. I have been trying to tweak it to lower the vcore a bit but this chip is very stubborn. I have decided though I'm going to stick with socket 775 for the time being. I just havent decided on what cpu to upgrade to.

If I were to go dual I would pick up an E8400. If i was going to go quad I would probably get either the Q9550 or Q9650. Any thoughts? Personally I was leaning more towards the Q9650. Whats a good air OC on an E8400 vs Q9650?

if you are going for a 9650, i would go for the core i7 , because its close in price , core i7 is cheaper at frys, that would make up the cost for the mobo , asus p6t, is good

Q9550 or Q9650 is the way to go. It will be a nice upgrade. The new coming E8700 looks interesting but price may not justified by performance.
