You can try to clean it and remove as much dust as possible. If you live with animals at home, its normal to find hair blocking fans. Dismount it, and try to remove as much dust as you can.

If it keeps blocked, try to apply a product like "WD" or similars (I don't know how to say it in english...). In spain we call it 3 in 1. Is a kind of grease for electric engines, fans, etc...

Asus carries a 3 year warranty on their cards so you can RMA it if you can't get it working again.

I'd try to take the cooler off and clean everything thoroughly. It's amazing what some dust blockage can do. However, if all fails you can get it replaced.

You can get an aftermarket cooler.

Or buy an aftermarket heatsink.
Although strapping a 120mm fan to it sounds like a good idea.

well right now i want to save every penny i get for my new mobo & cpu.

If its totally broke, I'll just RMA it. I'll probably have to wait a while or so, but its worth the wait then i guess.

I'll keep you guys updated.

I took out the 4870 and putted back my 7600GT.

I'll take off the fan cooler on the GPU tommorow and theck if there isent something suprising that might fix it. I really doubt cleaning it fully is gonna fix it tho.

I removed the fan off the sink and cleaned it out a little, but there was barely any dust.

I also tried removing the heatsink itself, screwed off the 4 pins on the back. but when i tried taking the sink off it felt like it was still stuck. Either it needs some pressure to take it off or i forgot something, so I decided to leave it like that bafore i'd completely rip it off and break the whole thing.

I attached the fan back now, and i'll gonna use high pressure air compressor to clean it from any possible dirt inside the sink itself.

I doubt anything is gonna work though, but its worth a shot.

Still, I wanna know the possible reason.. If this card tends to be broken there's not point in replacing it if the same thing can occur again.

if there was barely any dust then something is definatly faulty. contact the manufacturer and see if you can RMA it, either that or dish out the cash for an aftermarket cooler.

I'm probably gonna RMA it if it wont work tommorow..
it reached over 110C temp. It could have affected the card in general now.

Even if not, I better get a new one. maybe some of the chips or something are affected and might make the fanplug output not work anymore or w/e (i'm just guessing here)

I'll try it tho,

Just the general nature of electronics. I can assure you the 4870's defective rate is no higher than your average card. You just drew the unlucky card, unfortunately. You should be all set after you RMA and get a new one back.

Also it would sound like either the fan was faulty or possibly the fan connector on the card itself could have been faulty. Either way you're under warranty so I wouldn't both with aftermarket cooling or anything of that nature until you have a card that's working 100% correctly.
