Recomendations on OC a Q8200

Thread Starter
Ok 1st of all, i wanna tell u all this is my 1st thread and state that i really dk now much 'bout oc'ing a PC.

I wann know if can OC a Q8200 up to 3.6 Ghz or it would be a q6600 a better choice, since q8200 is cheaper right now than q6600.

I Wanna Build a Gaming Console With

Intel Q6600 or Q8200 Procesor
EVGA nForce 780i SLI MoBo
GeForce 9800GT Video Card
2 Gigs Of Ram
750w on Power Supply

Sorry if i dont give Much Specs but its really late where i live and i gotta rest. ED (Actualy i just going to update processor, V-Card and MoBo), also if u wanna give any other recomendations on wich MoBo or V-Card shoul i buy be my guest.

If theres a noobs tutorial, i should read 1st . . please link me to it.

I'd definitely get a q6600 over a q8200. It's really hard to get a q8200 to 3.6ghz because of the low multiplier (7 vs 9 on the q6600).

Also, read through the overclocking links in my sig to get familiar.

EDIT: Nevermind, further reading proves that the Q8200 is a pile of steaming poo.

br3nd064 - What about pushing a Q8200 to only 3.0 GHz? I too have been thinking about going with a Q8200 until some of the BIOS problems settle out on the X58 boards I am looking at. I'd really like to go with a 45nm Quad vs. the Q6600 but not bad enough to go with the Q9550 if I'm going to upgrade to Core i7 in a few months. After I do upgrade, the Q8200 would be put into dedicated folding service.

You don't want to know what I am upgrading from but this will be a major upgrade that is long overdue. I should just splurge on the Core i7 board/CPU I want now, it's just that no one has done any reviews on it yet and, although I will never be doing any 3xSLI with it, Kyle @ HardOCP is unable to get it to work in 3-way mode right now. 2xSLI has been very stable though.

Yes, it is true, but they are still better than the q8200's. Early q6600's had very low vids(~1.2), while the newer ones are averaging around 1.325.

some of the older q6600's in the older style box are the best OCers around reaching 3.6ghz @ 1.3 and 4ghz @ 1.45

those things are insane, while a Q8200 prolly wont get past 3-3.2ghz on max volts.

any Q6600 poops all over the Q8200, those just need to die
