Painting inside of the case?

Thread Starter
Just have a few questions about painting the inside of a case...

1. is it important to sand down the case and then hit it up with a few coats of paint (flat black)? Are there any kind of paints that bond to surfaces without having to prime it first?

2. how long do you have to air out the case so it doesnt have that paint smell to it?

I'm just looking to do a quick job with flat/matte black. I don't need it to be perfect though. Also could I just use black primer?

Thanks.

1 - i would recommend sanding the case with 320grit to provide better adhesion. I would also recommend self-etching primer(duplicolor or sem brand). sand, clean out, prime 4 coats waiting about 10-15 min between each coat. then do about 3 coats of color and then clearcoat for better protection.

2 - after 24 hours of being in m garage my case did not smell like paint very much, but i wold recommend letting it dry for a week before putting anything back in it, so the paint has time to cure and harden.

good prep will yield a lot better results, i learned this after my first mod. sand, prime, pant, clearcoat allowing proper drying times between each. also if you don't want the orange peel effect, i would wet sand with 400grit after each coat(allow the coat to dry for 24-48 hours) it will take a lot longer, but you will have a clear and smooth surface.

cattlerustler will be in here soon and will provide his input too.

actually I am only replying because I like MM-K's avatar (AIC )
anyway your advice is good but seems overkill for what he wants to do

I would recommend simply light sanding the inside of the case with 320 or 400 grit, cleaning it out with AI91% or denatured alcohol, prime a few light coats, then paint a few light coats with flat black, and call it a day

Yeah CR is right. If you just want a black interior. Sand it, clean it, prime a couple coats, paint a couple coats. BUT I would let it dry for like a week before you put parts in there, otherwise the paint might chip off.

I got impatient, and put everything back in like 12 hours after i painted. The paint did scrape off where the hardware (especially the PSU) had to slide in. Most of it is concealed so it didn't really bother me, but if you want all the paint to stay, I'd definitely give it a few days to harden.

from what I heard they are putting the band back together under the AIC name with a new singer that both looks and sounds eerily like Lane Staley. Now if STP could get a drug free clone of Scott Weiland I'd be a happy man

Is there anything in your case you shouldn't or can't paint?

I mean the case itself not any of the actual hardware.
