So I picked up the ASUS G50Vt-X1 for $1000 on Saturday [Mini-Review]

Edit: Don't ask for Benchmarks/Screenshots [That's what makes it mini. ...because it isn't taking a lot of page space or much of my time. ]

Basic Specs:
P8400 2.26GHz
9800m GS 512MB
4GB DDR2
320GB HDD w/16MB cache
DVD
Vista x64 Premium

So far I'd say that this is an excellent laptop at either price [$1000 or $1250, or anywhere in between] that it is offered for.

THE GOOD

The CPU Overclocks. Running the 3dm06 said I had an OC of 2.494GHz.. With the OC, the CPU score on the 3dm06 was 2250-2275. To reference, [using a guru3d review] the E6700 2.66GHz scores 2324 and the E6600 2.4GHz scores 2064. [That's just the CPU score, not the overall 3dm06 score.] [In addition my Toshiba SLi1's T7250 2.0GHz scores about 1775]

For those that pay attention to Vista's WEI scores, it is 5.2 at stock and 5.3 with the OC.

Overall score with OC'd CPU was 8880-8976 @ 1280x720 depending on the driver. The stock drivers were 176.xx. and scored the best, but had problems with games that are newer than it. [Sorry I forgot the exact driver, I wasn't planning on doing this]. I'm currently using 180.43 [Dox's] and the problems I had seen are gone.

I must say this notebook runs very cool. The CPU idles @ 30c, the GPU @ 50c. That's 20c less on the CPU and 12c less on the GPU than my SLi1. So no more keeping my coffee warm with my laptop

A little bonus on the Hard Drive, it is the Seagate 320GB 5400rpm that has a 16MB cache. It comes partitioned as C: Vistax64 and D: DATA drives. It is fast enough to make upgrading to a 7200rpm a waste. I hope Seagate makes a 500GB [Or 640/750GB] version of this HDD soon.

Comes with a full recovery disc.

THE BAD

Let's get this straight right now: THE GPU IS NOT A 9800M GT!!

A 9800m GT has 96 unified shaders [Stream Processors], the GS has 64. So while it is listed as a GT... it ain't.

EVERYTHING sees the 9800m GS as a 9800m GT. The graphics driver in the laptop itself, Hardware Monitor, GPU-z, Nvidia control panel, etc. Because of this I've not been able to OC the GPU. I've seen threads in other forums that have got to OC this GPU, but on older drivers than I needed. Rivatuner and Evga Precision don't work [for me] and ntune BSODs on me. Of those that claimed to have OC'd the GPU, it results in another 400-500 pts give-or-take in the 3dm06, but some complained of crashes in some games.

Maybe future versions of some programs will work to OC the GPU without issue. Even with just driver updates [as an educated guess from experience with my SLi1] the ASUS should see the 3dm06 scores rise into the 9200 range over time.

[Edit] The speakers are rather weak, fixing the equalization made them "less weak".

I ended up returning this laptop. Oblivion kept crashing if I ran the OC, though it would run fine without it.

One thing of note. I did a clean install prior to returning it so that I had none of my info on it. When I got it they told me they only had ones that they performed some sort of optimization that cost $40. Well when I finished running the install of the OS, drivers and software I found that I was running the same 80 PROCESSES that I was when I brought it home. So beware of the "services" Best Buy offers or claim to have done, because if they actually do anything then it isn't anything you'd actually be able to tell was done.

They also hit me with a 15% restocking fee despite the problem I had regarding ASUS's overclocking program and Oblivion.

Needless to say that I'm not shopping at Best Buy again as they aren't trust worthy.

quick question for you on that machine, I noticed several of ASUS' laptops run at at 1366x768 as a listed resolution, can you actually run the screen at a useable framerate? like 1440x900, or 1680x1050?

On an external monitor I think you can, but 1366x768 is the highest on board resolution.

My Toshiba SLI laptop [T7250/2-8600m GT] was equal in performance to the ASUS. The ASUS scored better in the 3dm06 by like 700, but that was almost all due to the processor with OC. My FPS in the tests with the Toshiba are just 1-2fps shy of what the ASUS gave.

I'd put a T8300 in the Toshiba, but the GPUs run so hot cause they're packaged together and I OC [Stock 475/950/702 -> OC 460/1150/799] that I expected them to die months ago.

I'm considering the x305-Q706, but I just missed the sale so I'll need to wait a few weeks. It has a pair of 9800m GTS in SLI and a P8400 2.26GHz. I'm not sure if the CPU is enough and would prefer the P8600 2.4GHz. Maybe since the P8600 has a price drop this month they may come out with a Q707. THAT or I was looking at SLI 9800m GT with a E8500 before Thanksgiving which was about $2800, but now nobody has 9800m GT anything [except Vigorgaming, but they're priced at the same as everyone else's SLI 9800m GTX] and SLI 9800GTX laptops are $3500 and out of my price range.

So it looks like I'm waiting for the Toshiba to go back on sale, or get upgraded , or both.
