Not to mention Apache runs like a dog in general (though even worse on Windows) and I've already moved beyond it. I'm running nginx now.

You couldn't run a site like OCN on Windows at all. It's just not up to the task. Windows was never designed to be a server operating system, unfortunately.

So it's all about choosing the right tool for the job.

EDIT: But maybe you need more. Compare what Windows and Linux have to do internally to serve a single (identical) HTTP request.

thats right, you cant beat them. as their AUP always pwn your butt when you "use too much resources"

i recommend a non-oversold hosting account. and hopefully a non windows OS

i would recommend my host's shared plans, and/or his windows hosting company

http://www.montecarlohosting.net
http://www.cdxsolutions.com his (Christian) linux box that i was on was superb! was down like 10 min for the entire year

remember always you get what you pay for..

Being a webmaster myself, I suggest doing a forum search over at WebHostingTalk to see what sort of user experience threads turn up. It's one place I turn to for website related things.

To throw out some suggestions...

I currently have websites hosted at these places: PeachyDandy, Cirtex Hosting, and Dreamhost. They're also ordered from little overselling to lots of overselling.

Ironically, Dreamhost's servers are the most responsive, almost never time out my FTP connections, and allow more than one simultaneous FTP transfer. Unlimited of many features is of course baffling since dedicated servers cost a lot more than $5 a month.

I wouldn't always trust the reviews you get from Web Hosting Talk. Alot of people tend to be evil, misstate the truth, or just speak utter vile about hosts, for really no good reason.

I personally ran into this issue when I posted my hosting company up there. Being new at the time, I worked with another host to use their TOS/AUP. They agreed in writting via email, however several users there felt it was needed to slam myself, the business, and company, without even knowing the circumstances behind it.

Because of that site, I have lost potential business, but at the same time, I have several well paying clients, that pay for quality, not perks. It's not cheap to host, and any person that tells you otherwise, is lieing. My networks use premium bandwidth, premium servers, and I have a dedicated United States based support staff, with YEARS of experience.

All I have to say is, ask the host for names of clients you can speak to, to review their company. If they shy away, or don't give you straight answers about issues, then it's probably best to look for a different host.

I just suggest doing alot of research and try to avoid WHT if you can.
