I'm such a noob OC'er

Thread Starter
I've been trying to get this damned CPU from hell OC'ed to at least 3.6ghz without exceeding the voltage listed by intel, its a Q9450 btw.
I OC'ed this thing to 3.4ghz on stock volts from everthing and i ran Orthos blend for 12hours + b4 i stopped it, came back with no errors, i run Blend in prime95 for 5-10minutes and the screen goes black whilst computer still runs.

Other than that im still unsure even after reading the OC guide a billion times of what voltages to increase and when, i tried NB after my Vcore but that made the comp sometimes not even get to post and even when i got into windows it was so unstable, locking up within minutes. Then i even tried raising my FSB and DDR2 failed even harder, even if i can get help to get this stable with prime95 at 3.4ghz i would be as happy as a clown! Thank you anyone!

(I'm doing all this from reading for 1 week about OCing, all this is very very new to me)

Keep your RAM unlinked or at stock speed when you're OCing your processor. That may be your problem right there, your RAM is linked to your FSB, when you raise the FSB you raise the speed of the RAM. IF you go too far the RAM can be unstable.

You can't unlink RAM on an X48 board. You can however lower the speed to make sure that it is not causing the instability.

What speed and timing is your RAM at right now?

right now i have it stable at 3.0ghz with a strap of 2.00D and the timing is 5 5 5 18 i think, timing is what i have absoloutly no idea about, i have 2x2gig 1066 kingston RAM

You've got some similar hardware to me. My problem however was that I was pushing the RAM a bit too far for the board. After tweaking my ratio to lower the RAM from 1066 to 965ish, it seemed a lot more stable up to 3.71. Lemme know what you find.
