Phenom work in NF590 Mobo?

Thread Starter
I have a DFI Lanparty NF590 SLI board that I've had for quite a while. I know there is some level of controversy if the board even has enough memory on board for the Microcode required for Phenom in the BIOS. Something about it only having 512k or something.

What I'm wondering is that DFI has a BIOS available that says it supports Phenoms. Would the BIOS only support certain Phenoms? Like the 9X00 series? Because I want to get a 9850BE. This rig is basically just going to fold 24/7, comparing it to the Opteron that's in there, I hope it's faster.

I used to have a 590 SLI board, and when I received my new Phenom (it came a day before my new MOBO) I decided to plug it into the board and see what happened.

At first, it would only post and run a blank screen after setup, but after a quick BIOS flash I was up and running at full speed. The only downside with the 590 board and a Phenom is that it only supports AM2, so HT3.0 isn't supported. Admittedly though, I didn't notice much of a difference at stock speeds between my 590 and my new 790GX. After overclocking, though, the AM2+ really shines.

Oh, and in case you didn't know, the 9850BE is a 125w CPU, so make sure your motherboard can support that much (you can probably find that info on your manufacturer's site). Either way, I don't imagine you'd damage your MOBO by trying that CPU in there: it probably just wouldn't power up (but I am NOT a professional!).
