Am gonna give 8800gt overclokcing a try!!

hey all

It's vacation and i was thinking about giving overclocking a try
I have a 8800gt (MSI) (rest of my system is on botom of this post).

I was thinking to explore the OCing of a graphics card and 8800gt is a pretty basic overclockable card as I have seen it getting overclocked alot around the web.

Know as I am pretty new to this i have taken some preperations and am going to take others before I start (got plenty of time as it is christmas holiday).
I downloaded Furmark to stress the system before and after, GPU-Z,...

First i would like to put up the stats I have taken before the overclock.
I played around with furmark and took some tests, then I took (yes the core was still a bit warm from the last test so that wasn't really that great).

Furmark at 1680*1050 with MSAA on 16x I ran the performance test for 60seconds. (I started the test with temperatures still at 69°)
At the end of the test the GPU core temp was around 79/80 degrees (was hesitating which temp, so let's go with 80). Very low FPS ofcourse between 3 and 11 if I recall.

So... are these good temps? or am I the unlucky owner of a disabled unoverclockable 8800gt .
I hope it's the first, because then i got something to do in the holiday.
Let me know what your thoughts are, is this normal, or not?

Best wishes and merry christmas

those temps are fine. you have to keep them under 90c though. If you use something easy like EVGA's precision you can bump up fan speed quite easily and get a lot more heat moving away from the card so you should probably start with that then move on to core, shader then memory last.

Good luck!

thanks
I also found Rivatuner. I'll go with 'precision' first, it looks alot easier
If you have some other testing programs that help me to stress the memory too (because I don't think that the memory also gets stressed enough) than that would be welcome to

Could someon give me a basic goal for me to reach with a overclock of my 8800gt?
I am so new to this, I really don't want to fry my system...

i've installed EVGA precision. But i do not know what to overclock first and with what program to stress it and for how long and what are the temp limits I should stay under.

Also, When I increase the core speed (standard 660mhz) with like 30mhz, with how much do I need to increase the memory clock speed? (basic memory speed: 950Mhz)
What program should i use best to stress it for a while and what are the temps I need to stay under.
Are there any risks when I turn up the fan speed of the card?

Answers to these questions would be very very much appreciated

bump again...

after only 3 minutes of stress testing (still everything on default: not overclocked) with furmark MSAA 16x, 1600*1050, fan speed at stock. the temperatures already reached 89° when I decided to shut it off.

this all happened with the graphics card on default.

is this and or is this normal? because I know that it should stay below 90°, is this safe then...

are u running the fan at default too? 30%? if so crank that bad boy up to 100% fan load via rivatuner or whatever prog your using.

oh and so u have an idea i have the MSI 8800GT OC 660/950stock running at 701/1000.this was a factor OC'd card that i pushed abit farther.

I always run my 8800GT OC's fan speed at 85% for everything but Benching and it seems to work well.

I've used RivaTuner before, but IMO it's too much bloat and unneeded options for me. Personally, when i play a game, I put my fan up to 45%. That gets me about an idle of 63-65 (57C was my idle when I had a single card) and a load of 78-80 (77C load with a single card). I haven't tested if my OC (700/1750/1005) is stable w/ 2 cards, but it was with one. I think I got a bit lucky with my cards, but a good goal I would say would be 650/1600/950).
