First time builder - New Build

Thread Starter
First post, first build. I've been lurking on these forums for some time, gathering all pertinent information so I dont ask 10,000 annoying questions. Here is what I am thinking of going with, with a couple of comments/questions at the end.

Case: Antec 900

Processor: Intel E8400

Mobo: GIGABYTE GA-EP45-UD3P LGA 775 Intel P45

PSU: CORSAIR CMPSU-650TX

GPU: XFX GeForce GTX 260 Black Edition Core 216 896MB

Memory: G.SKILL 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR2 800 (PC2 6400)

HD: Western Digital Caviar SE16 640GB 7200 RPM 16MB Cache

Cooler: XIGMATEK HDT-S1283 120mm

DVD Drive: LG Black 22X (CAV) DVD+R

This is what I have come up with. Before shipping and tax (yes, im not happy about the tax either) it is around $970, which I am okay with. My two main questions are these: 1) Does it make more sense to go with a different board since it is an nvidia card and a crossfire board? I would rather go 260 then 4870 (but am open to opinions), and while I dont have any plans to sli now I suppose down the road I might if I found another 260 for the right price. 2) Any benefit to popping another lower size HD into the system for the OS? I didn't include an OS in there (haven't decided if I want to go vista or use a copy of XP I have laying around. Thoughts on that too?)

This is primarily a gaming rig, and while I am not looking to play anything like max Crysis, I do play a variety of games from multiple genres. I just want to say I appreciate from my time lurking how competent, helpful and patient you are with newer people, such as myself. Thanks in advance for the comments.

The EP45T is a DDR3 board. You'll need the EP45-UD3P:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...pk=ep45%20ud3p

Other than that your hardware list looks good to me. If i had to pick on anything i would get some faster RAM since this board love RAMspeed.

And GPU-wise the board will run a 260/216 fine but if youre planning on dual GPU-setups in the future you might as well go for an ATI-card. This board does not SLI. CrossFire only since its not a nVIDIA chipset.
And if youre going for 4GB ram i strongly suggest you go for 64bit OS since 32bit cant fully utilize 4GB.
Look at my sig. We basically got the same rig.

*edit* Forgot this: Welcome to OCN!

Whoops, you're right. In my haste, I linked the wrong board on the site. I will reflect that change in the original post. Thank you for the welcomes

Seeing he only has to pay 35$ for his ram i'd say its a good deal. Seeing that 1066 ram is almost close to 90$ with decent timings.

Other then that it's a solid build

The only thing I don't like is the case. But, it's all personal preference. Great looking build. Hope it comes out good.

If you plan to SLI in the future, then don't get that board. Get a 750i EVGA FTW

Or what I would do, drop the GTX260 and get a 4870.

I think the 4870 is better than the GTX260.

Now consider a modular PSU.

Xigmatek 650w $110 - $50 rebate
Xigmatek 750w $125 - $60 rebate
Zalman 600w $100

I'm liking the Xigmatek 750w, and the Zalman 600w so far out of those.
I got a Silverstone 700w modular for $99 last week, it's $130 now
