Solid State Drive- worth it? - Page 2

Another vote for the 640GB Caviar Blacks from Western Digital.

I was impressed with The Rockers benching results in this thread:

http://www.overclock.net/showthread.php?t=428021&referrerid=38607

So much so that I am using these in my next build.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16822136319

I won't go solid state until the price/gb is more reasonable.

I got a 30GB OCZ Core V2 for $50(AR) on BF, from Newegg. They're $70(AR) now; that's still cheap, for the performance gain you get.

I loaded XP and some games on it and it flies. I did put the page files for the OS and IE7 on a secondary HDD to avoid the stuttering issue with numerous small disk writes. Since that what the OP is suggesting he wants to do, I can validate that it's an excellent approach to get the most bang/buck out of this technology.

Compared to my WD 6400AAKS and ST 750GB 7200.11, there is a world of difference. I've also used a 150GB VelociRaptor on another build and it was nice, but it didn't do what this $50, 30GB drive did, in terms of speeding up the system response.

No problem.

I really need to pick up a Dell PERC 5i RAID Controller though.

SSD's are silly to be honest at the moment when you can grab this sort of performance and space for less than one SSD:

You could even grab a hardware RAID controller as well.

buy two ocz core series v2 30gb, put them in a raid 0 watch you computer boot and you will be very happy. And then get a 1tb for storage. Its a great mix of storage and speed.

What, and how many hard drives is that?

That is 3 Western Digital 640gb AALS in RAID 0 using my trash onboard 780i RAID Controller until I can grab a Dell PERC 5i RAID controller.

Im guessing the Dell PERC 5i RAID controller boosts speeds?
Thanks by the way.

Yeah, you would be correct. Its dedicated CPU and Memory means the RAID array can operate at max speed without any other interupptions.

2x SSD in RAID 0

The boot time, the data access, the application execution or load times are impressive compared to any known HDD. And you won't need synthetic benchmarks to measure it, you'll wittness the difference so clearly just through your eyes, being the only measurement.

The little 30/32GB models with the cheap MLC chips could be some nice toys for gaining some extra points with benchmarks like PCMark 05 or Vantage. But as already quoted here; not really recommended for serious data storage purposes, unless you're willing to pay thousands of $ for a real high capacity SSD with really fast SLC chips on it.
