Stuck at windows screen.

Thread Starter
So, I have a Dell xps600 with an nforce4 sli edition, and of course, Dell restricted my BIOS from overclocking.

I found a piece of software that actually worked to overclock my FSB (Systool), and overclocked it from 3.4 ghz to 3.55, and ran games on it fine for a few hours.

Before going to bed I thought I'd up it a bit more, and so i OC'd it to 3.65 ghz, and it ran fine for about 10 minutes; then I got the blue screen of death.

Now whenever I boot up it goes to the windows welcome screen, but I don't have any users to choose from, and can't get past it. (the mouse cursor still moves so its not frozen)

It won't boot from safe mode, and starting from the last known good configuration didn't work either. I was able to boot up into the hard disk checking utility, and both my HD's passed. I also had another utility, and It scanned my pcu and motherboard, and they passed too.

I don't have a cd burner on hand atm, so I can't burn myself a bootup cd yet. But do you guys think i might have damaged my cpu? Or is this just an error made in windows from the crash?

(My xps has a huge heat-sink, and dual fans to cool it, but I wasn't able to turn them up higher, or check the temperatures with any software, so it was quite risky OCing it.)

Your CMOS is most likely corrupt, see your Manual for the CMOS Clear jumper and use it to he clear the CMOS.

But seeing that you have a dell it is possible that you do not have a CMOS clear, in this case you would need to dislodge the battery and put it back in, do not do this without knowing exactly what you are doing.

(Also overclocking as more then heat to deal with, so do not blame you problem on heat right away)

That should do it.
If you can't find how in the manual, usually it involves unplugging it from the wall, discharging static, opening the case, removing the battery moving a jumper plug over for a few seconds and then reversing the whole procedure.
Post back what happens please. We like to hear whether or not it worked. If it doesn't work maybe we can figure something else out.
BTW software overclocking usually ends up like this so it's not a good idea.

If clearing the CMOS does not work, I hope the Dell comes with an OS disk.

If it does, then boot-up from the disk (go to Bios and make the optical drive the primary boot) and then chose "Repair" (you won't loose anything on the hard drive). It may be that you damaged your boot-up sectors or something else in your OS when it crashed.

Once you can get into Windows (or if you can do it independently of Windows), remove the OC software. Those are not reliable and will result in more problems. Best OCs are done with the Bios, which is locked on your Dell.

Well, im giving up for tonight.

I took out the battery, and there was no plug in the CMOS so that's all I did.
Booted her up to find a "Floppy diskette seek failure"... but I don't have a floppy drive.... so I hit f1 to continue and get...

Error loading operating system. lol.

Thanks for the quick replies tho everyone, i'm sure i'll sort it out tomorrow. And if I don't... it's a great excuse to buy a blazing fast cpu + cooler.

My cousin living w/ us is a programmer, and used to work in computer repairs, so I'll have him take a look at it. Thanks for your help tho, i'll catch you guys tomorrow.

Edit: There is a section in the manual on the cmos, i guess i was supposed to put the plug on pins 2,3 for 5 seconds, then back to 1,2. Guess i'll try that tomorrow.

I had this same exact problem a couple months ago.
Needless to say- I had to reinstall windows.

It kinda sucks

were you by chance trying to install any sort of windows UI mods?
I'm blaming my problem on an install of something similar to windows blinds.

I reset the cmos and put my bios settings back. The errors are gone, but I still get stuck at the welcome screen.

I'll try to repair by booting up the OS cd from my cdrom next.

Well, the OS cd boots up windows, and then gets stuck at the windows menu. I booted up from their diagnostic cd too, but it just runs the same diagnostics i ran before.

Boot-up from the Windows CD, but you have to choose "Repair" and hopefully it will repair what's wrong with Windows (you won't loose anything on th HD) and will get you back into Windows.
