Quite confused...

So I just took apart my old computer that had been running 24/7 for the past 3 years or so when I realized I had been paying too much attention to my new comp and haven't been giving the old one any loving. What I found inside was disgusting. Seriously like a 1/4" thick of dust on every heatsink and fan, all crusty and muddy. So, I spent about 3 hours thoroughly cleaning every nook and cranny until everything was spotless, reassembled, and fired it up. I was anxious to see how much my temps dropped now that my baby was completely dust-free, but much to my surprise the temps didn't drop by a single degree. I thought dust was a computer's worst enemy??? There was seriously an insane amount of dust and computer mud caked in ever hs and fan in my case (I regret not taking a picture), yet it wasn't affecting temps at all apparently. So I proceeded to add a 120mm fan to the side intake to improve airflow a bit...and the temps went up.

Your case might not have very good airflow, or maybe there's a stagnant area (where the air isn't moving). It would explain why there was no difference (because air was never moving well in the first place, so the dust accumulation wouldn't have mattered). You said you installed a 120mm intake, but if there's not an equal amount of exhaust then the air just sits inside anyway.

Try leaving the case open and see what the temps do, or try arranging your fans differently (include at least one intake and exhaust fan).

What CPU/GPU is in that system?

Oh, and a lot of times the thermal grease on undusted heatsinks gets dry and worthless; try reseating the heatsinks with a new layer of thermal grease.

Yeah I just ordered some more as5. It's got an athlon 64 3500+ in it, usually runs at about 25c idle, today it was about 28-29c idle. I don't think there is stagnant air because I have a 120mm intake on the side panel blowing directly on the cpu and 2 80mm exhausts in the back.

Yeah it sounds like ur problem isn't airflow then. I wouldn't be worried though...25C idle is more than decent haha. Unless the temp more than doubles when being stressed, you're good to go. Also, I've had two Athlon 64 CPU's (Athlon 64 4000+ and an FX), both of which seemed to run cool most of the time (I once OCed my 4000+ after reseating the heatsink and forgetting to apply thermal grease...it never went past 55C haha)
