SLi 9800GTX+ 512MB or 8800GTX 768MB For 1920x1200?

Thread Starter
I have a problem.

I had an eVGA 8800GTX. I bought another MSI 8800GTX wanting to do SLi on my Striker Extreme.

Luck has it the eVGA broke down and I had to send it in for RMA.

2 months and 3 weeks later, they send me a (brand new?) 9800GTX+. Looks like 512MB not the 1024MB one.

Now I'm confused. Should I replace the 8800GTX with another 9800GTX+ or vice versa, or sell both and get something else. Problem is most reviews show SLi of either but not both, making comparison hard.

Thanks for advice.

Considering that both in SLI would, for the most part, suit your needs, I would just try to go the route that costs the least amount of money.

If I recall the 8800GTX was better when it came to higher resolutions, which should be that case with your 24 in monitor, if you dont, then getting another 9800GTX might be a better way to go.

grrrrrrrrr
I RMA'd a 680i 5 times *me and the guy who bought the board which I got back from RMA and I stupidly assumed was working and is now sending it back* and I still have not got a working board. Was there something you said or was this unprompted?

Well for the longest time I was borrowing an 8800gtx from a buddy. I had to return it to him so he could run SLI in his rig a few months down the line, so i bought a 9800gtx+. 6 months later, i bought another one for SLI. Seriously, the 9800gtx+ is basically an 8800gtx that runs cooler. I dont think there would be a problem with getting a 9800gtx+ sli setup.

would the 512mb vram severely affect game performance? so far reviews i see show that vram isnt really a factor except in 2 cases.

1. res of 2560x1600 OR
2. playing crysis at 1920x1200.

am i right?

cheapest 9800gtx+ is sgd299 (ard usd200, exch rate of sgd1.5=usd1), palit if i rem correctly.

btw i just collected my *new* 9800gtx+. the card looks brand new. wish singapore had step-up.

No, 512mb vs 768mb really only affects framerates in the two cases you listed. I would get a second 9800gtx+ personally.
