[Slashdot] Psystar Claims Apple Forgot To Copyright Mac OS - Page 3

Do you even need to copyright it, isnt it protected by IP laws, as in, arent IP laws something altogether different?
Quote:
Even with Intellectual Property, you still need a Copyright.
I was under the impression that IP is copyrighted as soon as it's recorded in some tangible form; there shouldn't be any "Copyrighting Process" involved, correct? That's how it is here in Australia at least (well, actually I'm not sure how it works for all the big corporations, I wouldn't think it's different?).

Linux is based on Minix, not unix (and minix is based on a non-unix microkernel)
Technically, Unix is the father of all *nix operating systems, including Minix. While most of these OSs aren't based on the "original" Unix source code, they're based on it in terms of functionality, POSIX etc. So what I'm trying to stress out is, all *nix OSes are "based on" Unix, and Linux wasn't actually based on Minix, it was influenced by it... I know, all nit-picking, but technically Linux was "based on" Minis just as much as Unix.

They should just throw these cases out the window and work with companies like Psystar to compete with Windows based systems. I guess they make too much money from the blatantly overpriced hardware they're pairing with their OS.

Don't get me wrong I'm not a fan boy. I'll never own a mac but I'd love to see apple work on making their OS work on all PC hardware and go completely software based. They'd probably gain a lot of sales and market if they would do that. I could see dell and other manufacturers picking it up and offer that or windows on their PC's.

Agreed.
They could do some major damage selling cheap computers with OSX. Windows gets tons of trial bloatware, OSX comes with all the *full version* applications that most day-to-day users need.

I have searched the patent office archives and there is no patent on OSX 10.5 that I could find so Psystar may have just won their case. HA HA screw you Apple

Isn't the berne convention for foreign countries? This will never go though. Once something is made in a tangible form, then it's already copyrighted. Getting it registered for copyright isn't necessary (but is smart) and only helps in legal situations like this.

I know someone here works in the patent offices in DC/Virginia... maybe he could shed some light on this?

But it's still Apple's property and they can do whatever they want with it. This psystar crap is getting old. Give it up already.
