Need a bit of advice on choosing new cpu+motherboard :)

Thread Starter
Hey , I asked this on the CPU forum and also like to ask you guys:
I am looking for a good motherboard + cpu combo to buy to help upgrade my system.

So far the 2 good choices I found are:

nforce 750i - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813188026

Q6600 - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16819115017

So i want to ask are those good choices, will they run well with my current system ?

Another thing I would like to ask is would that Q6600 run fine on my current motherboard ( http://uk.asus.com/products.aspx?l1=...20&modelmenu=1 ), would it run at all ? And if it does would my system be bottlenecked in any way ? I am asking this because I would rather buy the CPU now and the motherboard a bit later if it will work that is.

Thanks in advance

Your current motherboard does not support Quad core CPU's.

Those are excellent choices in CPU and motherboard.

If you're going to OC a lot I wouldn't get the 6600 now since the batches out are supposedly not good OCers at all.

3.4Ghz tops for 24\\7 safe voltages.

They are horrible VID's (1.3+), and overclock even worse.

Mine does 3.6Ghz on 1.4v, and it's from 2007.

Thanks for the replyes, so I understand my motherboard wont run a Q6600 right ?

I dont plan to OC a lot, but can you guys explain a bit more, how come the batches now are worse ? And would that have an effect if I dont OC or I do just a bit ?

Also my choice of MB + CPU is primarily aimed for playing games more than anything else, GTA IV for example, so if you guys know better stuff at the same price feel free to say

P.S. I dont really know much about dual core and quad core, but how do they scale for gaming, is it a question of GHZ, or a bit more complex than that ? And is quad core generally better than dual core for gaming

Higher Mhz is better for gaming.

A E8400 Wolfdale 3.0GHz would be a great choice for gaming.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16819115037

With the 750i the E8400 should have no problems OCing to 4.0Ghz.

Would you say that E8400 would be a better choice for gaming than the Q6600 I posted earlier ?

I ask because it seems like a very decent CPU, its about the same price as well. Oh and would this run smoothly on my current mobo ?

Again you current motherboard does not support quads or 45nm cpu's.

You would have to upgrade your motherboard along with the cpu if you went with either one.

You could get a used 65nm cpu like this one to upgrade for the time being. It would be a big improvement over your cpu when OCed.

http://www.overclock.net/sale/429704...ls-inside.html

You could also find many used 65nm cpu's like the E6300, E6400, E6600, E6550, E6750, E6850 on Ebay for sale that could improve your gaming.

Thanks a lot for the help mate, I think I made my mind up, I will just wait until I have money to buy both the CPU and MB. I think I will go for the E8400 as it seems to be more effective gaming-wise.

Thanks again
