Unfortunately this is true, even though the store is the one losing the money, not the artist or record company.

Exactly. All the people supporting these hardened criminals here on OCN is making me sick. Get over yourselves. They broke the law, they pay the price, which is really not enough in my opinion, but it's better than nothing.

Now she has been caught, and is complaining because she is being punished for her unlawful actions? That is just pathetic. Ever hear the old saying, "If you can't do the time, don't do the crime". Same principle applies here. If she can't afford to pay the charges she has been hit up with, she shouldn't have stolen music from the internet.

This whole single mother, $8.25 an hour, hospital bound, and on a transplant waiting list crap is just a facade to make people feel sorry for her. In reality, she is a hardened criminal and knew full well of the laws being broken in the act of downloading illegal music and knew full well the consequences of doing so.

They should be forced to pay the fines in their entirety, and be permanently banned from holding an internet account ever again, to prevent any subsequent infringing activity. If the RIAA really wants to set a precedent here, and really make people stop downloading songs illegally, they should have pushed for jail time. Sure, fines are bad, but actual jail time would be a much greater deterrent to intellectual property copyright infringement.

This lawsuit is a step in the right direction, and hopefully, is a sign of things to come.
The part in bold made me chuckle. I mean are you serious? Do you even have a clue what that statement even means. Then in your last paragraph you go on to describe how she should be punished. The whole post seems self-righteous to me. Have you never done anything wrong? I am surprised you didn't suggest she be lenched or something.

I don't proclaim to be perfect, but I have never infringed on any intellectual property copyright. The whole situation with torrents and P2P is ridiculous and has gotten completely out of hand. These people need to be dealt with swiftly and severely, or it will never stop.

You realize "these people" number in the millions. You expect that to be dealt with swiftly?

Just because you have never done it does not mean you can judge or condemn someone who has. I am sure you have done things that I don't approve of, but I am not going to ask that you be dragged out into the street and shot so that you can be made an example of. That is exactly what the RIAA is doing. Making an example of someone.

1. Law =/= Moral. Seriously, think for yourself... Some of you act like spoon fed sheep.

2. Why not? What is the retention rate of "criminals?" would you want them to change their life style or continue on a path of destruction? Wouldn't it make more sense economically to have something that guides them on the right path then to continue to spend tax monies on building prisons and spending money on court appointed lawyers and other fees, because you know... 'criminals can't afford lawyers' so one must be appointed.

And the above doesn't even apply in this case - This is a hospitalized teen, not some hardened convict...

I think some people are just trying to get noticed on OCN for being outlier

Unless there is more to the story than was written in that article, I'm sorry to say that she dropped the ball. If she didn't do it then she should have stepped forward before, namely in court.

It also doesn't make sense for it to be her Dad unless the ISP was stupid and allowed him to set up the account in her name and her address despite setting up the account at another address. I hope this works out for her!

On a side note, I'm tired of people claiming you should get a free pass if you are in dire conditions. If you broke the law then you broke the law. If she didn't break the law then I hope she escapes unscathed.
Wow you just don't stop do you. I think the whole single mother and constantly hospitalized thing MIGHT, I mean JUST MAYBE might have had something to do with why they didn't show up in court.
You're just awful, even a priest would give you the backhand about now.
