q6600 to q9550 upgrade? - Page 2

Why in the world is the i7 920 cheaper than the q9550 anyway? The tests show the 920 killing.

He has the MB and the Ram. He will need to get DDR3

the problem with i7 at the moment is not the CPU prices, but the prices of the mobos and ddr3.

Most people aren't upgrading to the 920 because all their parts are 775, and they don't want to/don't have the money to switch over to i7 (buy the new cpu, motherboard, and ddr3 ram).

Gotcha, my mistake I got carried away I on the other hand started fresh 1-2 weeks before i7... DOH. Also spent to much on this ddr2 mobo....

Bottom line, I would save up for the real upgrade and not the q9550 from a 6600.

Most people are shying away from i7's right now due to the cost of triple-channel DDR3. Some say that the $300 for a Core i7 motherboard is also expensive but I see plenty of LGA775 boards in the same price range.

Best bang for the buck, if you can live with Crossfire instead of SLI and already have DDR2 memory appears to be the UD3P board with a Q9550.

Edit: A Q9550 with an EVGA 750i FTW if you want SLI also appears to be a good value right now.

true dat! Hahahah, but yea i'm so excited about seeing how good this magical UD3P board is. As long as I can get a WC loop for my Q9550, I'm going to be set!

Tell me about it.

For me, it is coming down to either a Q9550 with a UD3P -or- an i7 920 with a P6T6 WS Revolution. I really really like the layout of the P6T6 WS and the fact it has no legacy PATA/floppy/PCI. On the downside, it has an NF200 SLI processor which I am not too fond of and may add some latency to Crossfire setups. However, I may never run neither Crossfire nor SLI so it may be a moot issue for me. I'd run a dual core video card before going to SLI.

Edit: I tell ya what though, this Celeron 331 has been rock solid at 3.0 GHz on a retail HSF for 4 years, on for 24 hours a day. The only time I turn it off is when we have a power outage. When I do upgrade, I think it will become a small WU folder and also serve boot images via tftp to some diskless clients.
