When comparing full speeds of two objects directly you want to show the full range of each. The ENTIRE reason in making a graph is to make it very easily (visually) to compare statistics. If the comparisons are going to be purposefully misleading then the ONLY reason for using a graph to represent the statistics is going to be to mislead people, and NOT to inform them. If you simply wanted to inform someone without misleading them you could just give them the numbers. What is the point in making a graph if you're going to force the user to look at the axes, and do the math themselves to figure out the actual difference?

Wow, the new card is like....infinitely better! Oh wait, no the graph is just made like crap. This graph is COMPLETELY worthless, all we can see is that the new card is faster, and we have no indication of how much faster.

At first glance the new card looks about 250% better, but the graph is just misleading.

WOW! Look at how much more the new card has over the old one? Wait, it is the same as the last graph? Well why make it look so drastic? Showing a difference in framerate with a graph like this is complete BS. The difference is only about 8%, which isn't really all that much, a graph like this is purposely skewed to fool people.

Now this is representative of actual difference. You could take the left column and lay it on top of the right and see that the difference isn't that much. A graph like this makes things very easy to quantify and understand. When a graph is done properly the person viewing it doesn't have to spend too much time looking at the axes and doing their own math.

I'm glad you guys continue to mention that this is how marketing is done, thanks, I had no idea......

What I'm saying is that I DO NOT CARE that this is how marketing and commercials are done. Commercials and marketing treat people like they are idiots, and that is my point. I'm not saying it will change, and I do know why they do it, my point is just that it is dishonest and misleading, and that I will tend to lean toward any decent company that isn't trying to deceive their customers by showing them misleading statistics or changing the branding/naming of their product multiple times without making any meaningful changes. What surprises me is how you guys just sit here and defend the companies that are trying to mislead you. You guys act like that because most companies do it that it is ok. Very sad.

/rant
You, good sir, win so hard that I'm going to quote your entire post.

Sorry lordikon, get used to seeing manipulated graphs. I'm sorry they get you upset, but this is how it is so you better get used to it. The world is not going to change for you.

The graph is actually perfectly accurate. There is nothing statistics that suggests you must start with zero. It probably is misrepresenting the fact though; that's probably not ethical.

That had better be sarcasm

-------------------------

I have absolutely no problem with graphs like these they're more precise than the one that was shown above as a good example. If it starts at 58 and goes to 60, then there's a 2FPS difference. You can make the bars look exactly the same if you make it go from 0 to 1000. Who cares about how big the bar is? It's what you read that matters. 2FPS difference = 2FPS. Bigger/smaller bar means nothing.

Graphs that don't start at 0 should be mocked and shunned. (At least regarding the given application).
