Overclocking giving lower frame rates

Thread Starter
Aye Aye people I have a XFX 8600GT DDR2 512

I decided to overclock using nTune. I bumped up 540/800 to 690/450.

I noticed quite a huge perfomance gain about 30% more frames overall.

I use Fraps to check my fps.

I noticed oddly enough that the frames actually go lower in my game Prince of Persia(New One) while other games it does not.

Even in Gears of War I noticed it jumps to higher frames but then next time around I load the game it sinks below to 20frames when I have seen it go up to 50frames. Of course I am checking the frames in the same areas. (as in when the screen is busy and compare to when the screen is busy).

Its odd, its mainly noticeable in prince of persia because my stock settings seem to hit higher frames for some reason consistently. While Gears its only once in a while when overclocked the frames dip and hit frames below stock settings. it seriously stays consistent around 15-20 frames when it is overclocked though.

Does anyone know why this is occuring?

I play everything on 1024x768 resolution.

I leave the setting on automatic fan control. It stays much below 80.

Yes I understand that the 8600gt is not a great card but its what i got to live with for now. turns out my sata ports be blocked if i buy a bigger cards =_='

Just for clarification...The FPS according to FRAPS is going down just while playing...not while recording right?

It looks like your bus OC needed to drop your RAM rate a good bit. Perhaps Prince of Persia makes more use of the memory than some of the other games.

You could try bumping the bus in smaller increments and find out what your RAM threshold is. You might also try unlinking memory and see what that does if you have that option.

First you may want to try using a different program to overclock your card. Try EVGA Precision; if it's not compatible with your card, try RivaTuner or ATITool.

Then, you'll want to raise your fan speeds to lower your temperatures. 80 is pretty warm, and you'd want to get it below 60 if you can. There's a chance that during high-load conditions in Prince of Persia and Gears of War, your card is overheating and the application is throttling back your overclock to protect the card. Try testing out your card with ATITool (scan for artifacts) while watching your temps and fanspeeds. let us know what you see!

Also - based on my own experience, Gears of War is very sensitive to the memory clock! If you have it too high, expect problems!

Speaking of, look up my gamertag and let's get some Gears Windows going sometime! There's a small group of dedicated players, and we'd love to have another n00b to destroy

Most games take advantage of memory clocks more than core/shader clocks.

my apologies it was 540/400 to 690/450. Shaders jumped from 1100~ to 1500~.

Alright I ran ATI Tool and hit scan for artifacts didnt find anything in 2mins.
Probably need to scan much longer.

I hit find max core clock then my screen turned all rainbow and I had to restart.

I would like to know is there a program that tests "on-load" conditions, because I check by load conditions my alt f4 in game and check in ntune the temp.

You say below 80 degrees under load correct? if so yes i stay around 70 on average.

I still checked a couple times without a doubt my card is running better fps in Prince of Persia at stock settings. I dont understand, I even tried leaving the memclock alone at 400 and bumped core clock to 690 it performs around the same maybe a 1-2 frame differences the overclocked being lower.

I am going to install my Far Cry 2 game and run the ingame benchmarks hopefully i find something.

question if the card gets too hot does the fps drop or does it just lock up?

Alright I installed AMD Dual Core Optimizer and I seem to see more consistency in the fps.

I think I was able to narrow down the problem.

It seems when I load a save in Prince of Persia I start off with around 20-22 fps but other times I load the same exact save starts at 28-30fps.

This is without the overclock, with the overclock I still see no difference it still stays between 20-22 and 28-30fps.

Can anyone explain why in the world loading the same exact save leads to different fps.

It only seems to occur in this game, my other games I see improvement in overclocking.

I noticed my CPU is running 90% on one core and around 80% on the 2nd core. o.o' Prince of Persia is running my cpu pretty hard.

Sigh... well Im off to test Gears of War now. =S

As for the FC2 Benchmarsk everything seemed pretty normal no useful info found.

Maybe Prince Of Persia is more CPU dependent than GPU. So it may be your cpu that's holding your FPS on this particular game.

EDIT: Try overclocking your CPU, if you haven't done yet, to see if you have any performance gains.

Yes, you will need to run ATI tool for several hours in order to ensure there are no problems. Most folks aim for 8 to 12, others say 24 hours is the only way to make sure you are stable.

As for your second question, I can't tell you specifically because my initial suggestion was largely a guess. However, I can guess about this, too, and say that the card will probably just underclock itself.

Last thought - have you updated all of your drivers to the latest version, as well as installed all game updates?
