All new E8400's are E0, I doubt you'd get a C0 at this point from most retailers considering how popular that chip is. They likely went through those quite a while back.

TankGuys sell E8400&E8500's that are guaranteed to be E0 stepping. They also sell Q6600's that are guaranteed to be G0 stepping.

It luck of the draw my friend. Some times you will get one with a really high VID, which will limit your OC significantly, unless you are h20 cooling. There are some debates to how much you can push, but most people like to stay below Intel specs of 1.5v for Q6600.

My advice, keep you Phenom because you won't get much for it. Q6600 will cost you somewhere around $180 new. Just order, keep your fingers crossed, and hope you'll get a decent one with VID of somewhere around 1.25v.

Yeah I have used them all E8000 series and the Q6600, if u want a good one for sure, best bet is ebay, there are plenty on there for good prices and some unique ones that have been tested and will let u know what it will clock too, for example I just sold my old Q6600 on there that I overclocked to 3.6ghz, so they knew it would rock, but really any E8000 will run sweet, encoding though, I would roll with a Q6600 or 6700.
