2nd PSU to power 4870

Thread Starter
Recently got a 4870 but cant run it due to insufficent power. Its just hit me that I have a generic 400watter sitting around, could I use this to power the card inconjunction with the one powering the rig.

Seems a shame for it to be sitting around till I get enough cash to buy a new PSU

What's your primary PSU?

Yes a secondary can power it BUT you won't want to just have a power supply just for the 4870. You should have like CPU/mobo/hard drives on one PSU and fans/video cards/etc on the other to balance the loads.

Its an Akasa 500w. Thanks for that, if I decide to do it (feeling lazy) will do it that way.

It may look off unless you have a second PSU bay, or you can cut a little hole to run wires through and have it as a External, that's what I am getting from reading, But also you should put fans and stuff like the GPU/CD Drive on it.

Never skimp on a PSU.. Just get a better PSU no need to run more than one,

yeah cyber, i think he knows. but it's hard for people to get money right now what with the economy and all. sometimes you have to just make do and ghetto-rig stuff to make it work.

I ran 2 PSU's for a while...it works fine just jump the green and black wire with a paper clip and balance the load on all the rails if you can. will work fine. Ugly but it will work fine.

I agree, make SURE you have a load on all the rails, most have a minimum required load of 0.5 amps so attach a hard drive + a few fans to use up the juice, I see you have "enough" harddrives so it should be fine.

You can set up a second PSU for video card. I'm running a dual PSU set up. Just connect pin 14 & 15 with a paperclip, then the secondary PSU will alway be on.
