Pentium D 820 overclock

Thread Starter
Ok, so to try and get enough horsepower to watch blu-ray movies on my PC, I took the speed up from 2.8ghz to 3.2ghz on my Pentium D 820. It seems stable, because i've been encoding video on it for 36 hours now and haven't had any issues or lockups or anything, but load temps are at 74C. Is this safe? I've got the stock HSF on there right now, but it'll be a while before i can afford to improve cooling at all. VCore is at 1.31v

Also, whats the cheapest LGA775 chip I could get that would be fast enough to playback 1080p AVC video?

I would not reccomend you keeping those temps that high, keep it below 65, but good luck, i got my 3.2GHz P4 540 to 4.4GHz stable and 4.95GHz in a suicide run. *JaKe*

well for startes running stock is pretty bad and load temps of 74c are also quite detrimental, i mean its not gonna break the chip but that will seriously shorten its life span

as for blu-ray encoding im not sure how much horse power u need, you might be better off buying a really cheap gpu to take care of it, most newer low end gpus would work well

surely the 8800gtx can play blueray??! cant it?!? hell i thought even a pentium D could play blueray easily?

Oh and doesnt the pentium D have a higher temp threshold? its safe up to 80c i think.

It only costs around $30-40 at most to get manageable temps for your CPU, just get a Xigmatek HDT-S1283 + mounting bracket on newegg.

I used to run the same Pentium D and it runs really really hot. Try getting a aftermarket heatsink for it.

the 8800gtx doesnt have an onboard hd video enconder, the thinking behind that was "if the buyer was gonna put out this much for a gpu they must have enough for a good cpu" so nvidia never had an encoder on the 8800gtx

I don't know much about blu-ray encoding or anything like that but I can say that those temps are wayyy too high. You can drop em by a lot and get a higher OC outta that CPU by buying a new heatsink. my pentium D 925 was running at those temps with my overclock with my old stock heatsink then I bought my AC Freezer 7 pro. Its a good heatsink, and Dirt cheap.

movies are more cpu based, my laptop will play 1080p movies perfect, t5450/x3100
its all cpu mostly
an e1200/e2xx0 cpu would play it fine
