Overclocking Q6600 on Gigabyte EP45-DS3L motherboard - Page 2

With the memory tab, remember that the actual MHz speed needs to be multiplied by 2 for the rated DDR2 speed. So 400MHz x 2 = DDR2 800.

edit: I can already see that the ram divider is the problem. By leaving the divider at it's current setting, and changes in FSB will push the ram past it's rated speed, which is most likely causing the issue.

I would recommend that while you overclock, set the SPD in bios to the lowest divider, which is 2.0.

Here is a screen shot of the P35-DS3L bios with the settings explained, they should help you understand the bios settings a little bit more.

Note some differences between the P35 and your P45 chipset. The default MCH (northbridge) for your board is 1.10v due to the chipset die shrink. So that means that you should only need 1.25v 1.30v max for a high FSB OC. Also note that the ram used for this was 667, so dont hold yourself to these numbers, just understand what each of the settings affects. Also note that for the Voltage settings, you have a 65nm CPU.

Ok I tried all that you said but I still cant get it to 3.0ghz in Windows although it says it is 3.0ghz in the BIOS and I have to be honest with you Im crap at maths. Heres where Im stuck my coreclock ration dosent go up ot 10 it can only go up to 9 and my ram is 800mhz dual channel and I think the CL is 5-5-5
Im sorry for being a pain in the ass but Im really new to this
Can anyone tell me what Im doing wrong

Can you please list all your settings.

Also, does CPU-Z show your multi as 6x? If so, disable speedstep and/or C1E.

As for the multi, 9x is the highest the Q6600 can go, you would need a Q6700 for a 10x multi.

I think you need to turn C1E (speed step off) that kills overclocks.

if you can get some pics of your bios that would really help.

Yeah, thats the problem. Well its not really a problem, the board will enable power saving when Speedstep and C1E are enabled in the bios. If you put a load on the CPU with Prime95, it will jump back up to the 9x multi and 3.0GHz OC.

Ok I have disabled them in the BIOS could you explain what prime95 does? what will it do for my problem will it help with overclocking

Wait thats exactly whats happening sometimes the multiplier stays at 6x (2ghz) then it goes to 9x(3ghz) does this mean that I have actually overclocked my processor correctly?

Yes, you have OCed it correctly. It is dropping to 6x to save power (the voltage is also dropping). Prime95 will stress all 4 cores to 100%. As long as it doesn't crash, you know the OC is stable. Also when the cores are stressed, the speedstep should bring the multi back to 9x for a full 3.0GHz OC.
