what's the core I7 ????

Thread Starter
hi everyone....

I know what are those Intel CPUs : core 2 duo, core 2 quad, & core 2 extreme.

but what's teh core I7 ???
and what does it differs from those posted above? which one is better?

and how can you assess them gradually ????

and just let me remind you that am just a journalist, so don't blame me for my stupidness by the way.... the newspaper I work for has just published an esay written by me

best regards

Core i7 is a quad core processor that utilizes hyperthreading and uses a new socket called LGA1366. I personally think that the Core i7 will only dominate if you have a balanced amount of GPU power (SLI/Crossfire multi-card setups).

The new Intel CPU is pretty much just an entirely new generation of processors. They require a new motherboard socket type (1366), but as a result they have much higher performance potential. They also support DDR3 memory, which is the next step for high performance RAM. Also, they have new multi-threading support, with each of the four cores being able to process two threads simultaneously (meaning the computer reads the CPU at 8 cores!). They also have 8MB of L3 cache (which is a lot) and run on a 45nm process.

Congrats on ur publication by the way! I've been a journalist/writer for awhile now and I know it's exciting when you get your first job!

Roughly speaking the i7 has

- higher memory bandwidth, and lower memory latency
- higher system bus bandwidth
- slightly better singlethreaded performance, and slightly better 64-bit performance
- much higher performance in multithreaded applications

than the Core 2. For most day to day applications, there's not much of a difference and the Core 2 Quad is still a powerhouse. On the other hand it's going to be more future proof, there's more CPU power 'on tap' so to speak.

I agree. There's just so much CPU potential here that it's pretty much overkill unless you can compensate with adequate GPU's (4x Crossfire/SLI is probably what is needed for no bottlenecks, especially w/DDR3!)

For a i7 build log check BubblelessI7

And its a new CPU that requires a x58 chipset motherboard and DDR3.

Core i7 is a pretty cool guy, hyperthreads and doesn't afraid of anything.

It's Intel's new platform LGA1366 chip, it's a monolithic quad core with integrated memory controller able to address three channels and capable of hyperthreading. It is a completely different architecture than LGA775 as the FSB (at least one comparable to the one in LGA775) is nonexistent, and L2 cache is sharply reduced in favor of L3 that all cores can share. Cores no longer communicate through the FSB, and the i7 is generally faster in most applications, specifically those with heavy memory performance stresses. The chip is primarily designed this way for better multichip performance, as in large servers where chip-to-chip communication is critical. AMD went to a similar processor platform last year, and Opterons based on that platform are currently available.
