One more questions - i paid like over 300 for my video card... its the last thing i want to screw up - its a quad dvi card for my three monitors and tv
I have it set at 90mhz... the lowest setting it will take... when i raise the fsb, does it raise the pci-e frequency too?

Manually set it to 100MHz, not lower, not higher. It will not raise with the FSB unless you have it set to "Auto"

Also, did you buy that video card recently? Because for less money you could've gotten a lot better card that still has 4 DVI ports, like the 3870x2 or you could've gone even cheaper and get something like a 9600GT - run 2 monitors off of that, and then gotten a 2nd PCI video card to run the other monitor and the TV; like a 8400GS

Bought the Card last Jan or so... was the only one I could find at the time. Looks like there is a sappahire on newegg for 299 now...

What is the recommended time to run OCCT for? How long do you need to stress Ram and a Processor before you know they are stable? Right now... it looks like my q6600 go stepping only wants to hit 3.1 stable... at 1.45v i don't want to push the voltage to the limit really.. i want to make sure the processor will keep ticking...

you will get varying opinions on what people consider stable. As far as I what I do I run the OCCT cpu stress for an hour, 8-12 hours of Prime95 blend test and then Memtest.

Personally I run Prime95 (pretty much does the same thing as what you're running) for a whole whopping... 10 minutes hehe. I've found if it can stand that then it's stable enough for anything I can put it through. Heck my current overclock of 3.6GHz can't keep 4 threads of Prime95 running longer than 2 minutes, but it can take 30 minutes straight of Divx encoding (constant 90%+ CPU usage). So really having it stress test stable isn't required for using real-world apps. Not once have I gotten a BSOD or crash since I've had this overclock.

Just my opinion based on my experiences.

Interesting,
Just got your Board today from DealTree ebay as is 13.50 shipped bent pins in processor socket.Straightened out the Pins in an Evga 790i with a 5mm pencil I had lying around.

A miracle that board just booted into the bios!!!!!!!! 53.00 Shipped Dealtree,
so unto this gigabyte board keep my fingers crossed.

Lot of Information on the Q6600 starting setups etc and overclocking.
I am going to throw in a tried true tested Q9450 that ran at 3.8 stable in a P5e3 wifi deluxe into that gigabyte board if it works.
The P5e3 is getting an unusual Chip.and she booted with it at 3.8 no Bios changes.Xeon 3353 similar to q9450 but at 80watts instead of 95.
In the hunt for 4g on air stable.
Hey i will post later going to play with that gigabyte board.I do not know if it will help you as the chip is a q9450.
I will thoroughly read this thread though.
as a previous poster said a good Video card and then a 512 even 256m 8400 8500 even 8600 that is my setup on 2 of my computers for quad display.

I like that 4 DVI dual GPU ATI Monster HUGE.Have to wait until I unload on Ebay some of this acumulation of computer parts.
I am a Newbi with the current crop of boards CPU but reading rereading helps a lot even if you do not understand most of it like me.

You still get a feel for this overclocking.

I am having much better luck recently. Its coming together and am getting close to what I want out of these Builds and learning.

good luck.

Thank You guys, I have successfully run some stress test and have a stable system at 3.2ghz. I know this isn't all that impressive, but its about a 33% boost in speed and overclock. I think that's pretty good. I have my volts at a modest 1.45 for the q6600. I tried going up to 1.5v at 3.4ghz but i couldn't get it to run test and be stable. I can notice a big difference and thank you guys for your help.

If someone could point me to a thread talking about the advantages of a new core i7 920 above a q6600.

Will come here next time before i buy componets and figure out the best overclocked equipment!

The Core i7 is a massive improvement over a Q6600, and the processor itself is actually very cheap for the performance you are getting. They overclock easily to around 3.8GHz on air and better clock-for-clock than Core 2 processors. The only downside is that you need a new Socket 1366 motherboard, and triple-channel channel DDR3 RAM for your system to be Core i7 compatible, which adds a lot to the cost.
