I have a 9700 @ 2800 rpm on my Asus Crosshair and with the fan boost function i get 3000 rpm. With my 6400+ and the 9700 with ambient room temp of 22c my cpu idles @ 27 - 30 with fan speed @ 2100rpm

The Zalman coolers are fine....sheesh.

I'm getting 45c load with my Zalman 9500 on my e6420 OC'ed to 2.8. The e8400 runs cooler than the older e6xxx series so something is wrong.

I'd suggest pulling the heatsink off, cleaning it with either some Arctic Silver cleaning solution or rubbing alcohol, applying some new thermal paste (just a little teeny dot is enough) and reseating the heatsink. Your temps should be way better than what you're seeing.

Also, what kind of thermal paste are you using?

just using the thermal grease that came with it and i have taken it off and put less on but didn't fix it

btw the grease is in a bottle with a brush on the lid so cant squeeze it out and put a small dot of it on the CPU

You might have to get a better TIM. Like MX-2 or AS5.
