Pro tip: Immediately upgrade to a bigger hard drive =)

There are no PS3s more prone to "corruption" than others. The very first batches had that "Yellow Light of Death" bug but I heard it was due to the EE chip (PS2 backward compatibility), which isn't in the 40GB, so no worries!

My power's gone out a couple of times (old dorm room) and no harm done, though both times the system was only in standby, not actually powered on

sure,but i mean when it's actually updating the software because it takes a REALLY long time.
i'm just worried because the system is VERY expensive here and i don't want to lose it to a power outage.

Even if by the off chance it did happen, I think you get a one year factory warrenty. and if you are that worried about get an extended warrenty from wherever you buy it.

A UPS would solve that problem easily.

As a general rule losing power when reflashing firmware is never a good idea. I'd say it would be bricked in the event of that...

Like I said a UPS would be the simplest solution.
