My computer locks up when I try to change my HT multiplier

I have an AMD Athlon 64 X2 5600+ @2.9Ghz and I am using AMD OverDrive to overclock and monitor and stress everything. If I try to change the HT Multiplier my computer completely freezes up and requires a restart. Is it the program or is there something I need to change or do? I am very new to overclocking but I am a bit of a hardware guy so I can understand most stuff.

overclock using your bios not overdrive.

This happened to me, i couldn't boot at all when changing my multiplier (so in your case, its freezing when you try it in overdrive), i took everything off auto in my BIOS and manually set everything and it worked fine, try that.

But how do I know what I'm doing is safe? In OverDrive it tells me what frequencies I'm going to get and puts things in red and such.
