Clicking noise under load...

Hi,

I built my sig system a couple of weeks ago now, and it's all been completely fine, and very enjoyable. But I just started getting a kind of clicking from my case after about 5 minutes of gaming.
The best way to describe the clicking is a sort of geiger-counter like sound, similar to the sound an electric lighter makes when you ignite it, but softer. I turn on the computer and it's all normal, but as soon as I start some kind of game (cod 4 or 5 for example) the clicking starts. First quite slow but then it picks up and becomes quite worrying very quickly. If I quit the game and leave it on desktop...or type a message for a forum...it dies down and eventually stops, apart from the odd single click? I haven't opened my case yet, but from what I can tell it sounds like it's coming from the motherboard backplate (the bit with all the usbs). My temps are fine, gpu doesn't go much above 60c on load. And a 25cm side panel fan and two rear 80mm exausts at 2500 rpm keep the case well ventilated.

The first thing I thought of was the psu, but the sound is coming from lower down than that (psu is top mounted). Anyone have any recommendations as to isolate the noise if it is a problem? This is my first full build, I've changed just about everything in a computer before, but never put it all together at once.

Help is greatly appreciated, as at the moment I'm too scared to do anything other than leave it idling.

thanks,
safe

Yeah I read that somewhere, and even saw a demo on youtube of someone who had taken it out of their case. But I can't understand why it would gradually get much much worse when gaming, it doesn't suddenly start when gaming, just progressively?

I'm getting speedfan now to take a look.

thanks

Agreed, definitely sounds like a dead hard drive to me. Better backup / replace it as soon as possible, before you lose all data that is on it.

EDIT:
It makes that sound more often when in game because you are accessing your hard drive to get the game files. When browsing the internet, you use your hard drive to open FireFox (insert other browser here), and that's just about it.

I've got speedfan now and can access the S.M.A.R.T status tab, but there's no hard drive available from the drop down list. Is that a bad sign?

I did a little looking up of 'the click of death' and most of the demonstrations, including a recording on wikipedia, are nothing like my noise, which is annoying. I would have liked it to have been something simple like a hd fail.

It's very irregular, often coming in bursts. Like, well a geiger-counter. Can hd failure sounds be irregular? Also it's not much of a mechanical sound. More a sort of electric/static kind of sound. I wish the rest of my computer weren't so loud so I could record it properly and post it.

Also if it's relevant, I was playing for several hours tonight, and had one black screen freeze which I ctrl alt del'ed out of fine. Windows said the display driver stopped responding. Could that mean anything?

thanks a lot,
safe

Try this, unplug all fans except cpu and gpu fan.remove all opical drives.reset bios.
Now,first try to run memtest for 2hours to make sure your ram is good.
Then boot into windows and get a hdd benchmark application, then set that app to do a complete read test suite and to loop it several times.listen for the strange sound while you do this.
Also, motherboard caps usually start to make a static sound when they start to die or are put under heavy stress.
Report back with anything that you noticed.

I recorded the sound, albeit basic hard to make out. I used a eq to highlight the clicking as much as possible while removing as much of the fan noise as possible. Have a listen and tell me what you think.

cheers,
safe

EDIT: That's the clicking at it's very worst so far. That was after spectating cod5 multiplay for only a few minutes.

sounds like a fan wire hitting a fan blade. take your computer apart and turn it on in a sound-dampened area and try to find out where that's coming from.

edit: of wait! you know what that sounds like? my old radeon 9800 had a ****ty fan.. one of the blades came off once and the fan became unbalanced and made a sound like that.
