Clicking noise under load... - Page 2

Tell me about it. On the recording it sounds remarkably like a wire resting on a fan, but it's deffinitely not. Every fan in my computer runs at 100% constantly, so it would start as soon as the power was on, and the sound is more static sounding in real life.
Say its the motherboard caps like you mentioned before, how would I go about insolating that? I think I'm going to take out the gpu and use onboard graphics, then see if the clicking stops, to rule out my gfx card. But what from there?
The only thing I was a bit nervous about installing was the cpu, but presumably if that's working fine then I've installed it fine? Can cpu's click like that?

thanks for listening,
safe

I know what you mean man... that idle clicking sound that happens once every second-3 seconds is the deadliest. Sounds like someone's tapping the tip of a pen on your hard drive? Backup files ASAP

Yeah I thought of fans, but they all run 100% constant including my 4850, I use the catalyst manual fan control on 100% because I can't hear it even on full and I might as well keep it cool. So because all my fans are always 100% I'd have to hear it as soon as I powered up, and if not then as soon as I logged in (GPU fan kicks in 100% on log in).

This is so frustrating, I've got the side of my case and all the wires are clear anyway. I'm going to power up and game with the side off and really try and locate it. I'll post back.
I hate this, seriously I care so little about my hd I'd rather it just explode and that be that. Then go buy a new one for pittance.

Well... I would just take out the HD itself then start up. If it's not the hd then you can start doing some hardcore inspection

That's a nice idea, but the clicking only starts when I've been putting the computer under load for at least a few minutes. Annoyingly I don't have a spare hd to swap out and test.

Remove the hdd and boot from a linux live cd and download an app to stress the cpu and ram..then you can rule out the hdd..im using my phone now so you gonna have to google for these things:linux live cd, and a stress app like prime95 but for linux.

I'm really confused now. I took my pc off my desk, removed the side, just had a look inside, didn't touch anything, put it on my floor with the side still removed and started playing. The clicking hasn't made a single appearence. I'm relieved, because I think I can rule out anything hardware related. Especially the mainboard, ram, cpu and psu, (the expensive things I bought recently). But now I'm really struggling to think what could have been causing it.
I thought it could have been my router and/or speakers which both sat on top of my case, but I've done that for months and it's never done anything.

Does anyone have any ideas as to what it could have been? I'm baffled. I'm going to trial and error by putting things back how they were in stages and see if it starts again. But in the meantime I'm going to bed.

safe

Er.. I meant I literally had my dying HD in my hand right next to my ear while I booted up to make sure the clicking was the hd. I loaded some progs and I had it right next to my ear it was definitely the HD
