asteroids hit the earth everyday. just not on people and besides the are ODDS, or statisitcs. Just cause someone wins the lottery doesn't mean one person in life has been hit my an asteroid that exact second.

Its math vs. Life

Odds:

1 in 8,259,888

If there are 5 balls and there numbers range from 1-65. So average lottery.

There are about about 2k satellite objects from space that hit the earth in a year. Those are the ones that make it through the atmosphere

It is approximated that there are 6.7 billion people on the earth

So 2k/6.7billion=

Odds of being hit by a satellite object=1/3,350,000
Odds of Winning the Lottery= 1/8,259,888

I didn't believe it, but I looked it up and by some accounts its true:

Astronomer Alan Harris has made that calculation. Allowing for the number of Earth-crossing asteroids — the kind that can hit us because their orbits around the Sun intersect ours — as well as how much damage they can do (which depends on their size), he calculated that any person’s lifetime odds of being killed by an asteroid impact are about 1 in 700,000.
The reason being that a large, once in a million years asteroid that kills everything kind of skews the results. They don't just kill us one or two at a time, they're all or nothing.

thank you

i studied statistics, and depending on the numbers and amount of balls and so forth. The odds of being struck my lighting are also greater then winning the lotto

Your calculations for being hit by a satellite object aren't correct. You make the assumption that every object that de-orbits strikes a person. To find the chance of being struck by de-orbiting debris you would have to find the percentage of the surface area of earth covered by (live) human bodies, and multiply it by the rate at which objects de-orbit. And that only assumes a uniform distribution of falling space junk. Your probability of being hit per year is much less than 1 in 10 billion.

That logic only works if an asteroid hitting someone everytime one struck was an absolute.

I can't think of the name off the top of my head, but there's a casino in old Vegas that will honor any initial bet. Once placed, you may now use that amount as your table limit. For anyone trying to think of the place I'm referring to, it's the Irish themed one on the strip and has been around since the mob days.
