ACER 6920 cpu upgrade?

Thread Starter
I have a Core 2 Duo T5550 1.83 GHz cpu now and my laptop is slow. I would upgrade maybe to this http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16819111001
if it's worth doing so. Right now I have to wait for the virus scan to quit before using. It takes hours to defrag and not that much is on the drive.
Would this be a good upgrade or should I look at another cpu.

I would suggest a 7200RPM drive to speed up the defraging, no telling how hard the CPU will be to get it out of their, plus theirs no telling how much heat your o/b HSF can take.. *JaKe*

My 1st thoughts were along the lines of dcshoe. Thinking not the CPU. But I don't even now think HDD is the issue either. I say because most current 5400 HDD's are faster than older 7200 HDD's (areal density) and current 320GB 5400 HDD are faster than 200GB 7200 HDD's. Your CPU should be more than capable of running the tasks you mention.

What do I mean by your CPU should handle those tasks fine? Well if you told me your CPU had trouble running Word I would say it is not your CPU? I feel the same about your situation. What OS and how much RAM do you have? What anti-virus? What is idle CPU usage?

I have concern about CPU being the primary cause of your issues. 1.83Ghz is not that slow. I have a 1.6Ghz AMD and do not have the issues you describe and yours is much more powerful (Intel).

That said that CPU should work and I do not think heat will be a problem as both CPU's have 35wTDP.

Good luck with whatever you decide.

I have this Acer laptop 6920-6508. So I was wrong about the cpu, it's not a T5550 1.8 GHz but a T5750 2.0 GHz. 4GB 5300 DDR2, 250GB 5400 SATA hdd and a Vista Home Premium 64-bit os. When I do use this laptop it's to do business or to listen to online music and video chat with family when away from home. I defrag about every few weeks. I run a full virus scan every couple of weeks. My Virus software is "The Shield Deluxe 2008".

I am guessing here but if you defrag often. If optimize is an option do not optimize every time do just a defrag when already optimized in the past. should be much faster. And I don't think you really need to optimize every couple of weeks. It is a lot more house keeping than you need every time and takes much longer. What defrag are you using? I just downloaded Smart defrag (free) Cnet editors gave 5 stars. I can't rate yet as just got. But I observe my CPU usage is under 10% w/T9400 so can't see it over stressing even yours if what say 20% usage?

Turn anti virus off does that help?

And also should of been the first thing I ever said. What does "Task Manager" say CPU usage is? I mean unless 100% (or very high) faster CPU unlikely to resolve issue.

Just have to find out the cause or causes to fix. Run HDTune it could tell us lots.
