Is There Any Value In Using a RAID Controller for DVD Drive Too?

If you are going to RAID2-4 drives on a high end RAID card does it make sense to also put your SATA DVD drives and your backup array on the card as well?

Say you have a 8 port RAID card and your primary RAID array is 4 drives. Would you put your 2 backup drives (RAID1) and your 2 DVD drives (SATA) on the controller as well or leave them to the default motherboard controller?

Personally, I would place the RAID1 array on the RAID controller but keep the 2 optical drives on the onboard. That's just me.

simplicity?

Its probably a lot easier to set up the raid array on a separate controller than fiddle around with setting up the array while making sure the dvd drives aren't being mixed into it also.

Hardware RAID controller have onboard memory which would benefit HD/array performance but not optical drives.

RAID Controlller cards are there because they have a dedicated processor and usually dedicated memory to aid Performance & Reliability of Multi-Drive arrays.

Your Optical drive does not need its own CPU or its own memory, therefore it is pointless plugging something extra into the RAID controller card which won't benefit you at all.

I feel it would simply add more unnecessary stress to the RAID card. The primary bottleneck in a DVD drive is the speed at which the disk spins, and not the interface.

Next! Is there a point to RAIDing SSD's, even the Intel SCL and MCL drives? Conventional wisdom would suggest you might get X25-E performance out of the X25-M drive using a nicely buffered RAID card. Is this true?

Yes, if you have 2 or 3 SSD's on a good quality RAID controller such as the Dell PERC 5i, then you will see very very fast results.

However, the price puts most people off.

ARC-1210?

Would the Intel X25-E and X25-M have very similar write speeds under a RAID controller? I would think both drives could cap out the bandwidth under RAID conditions.

Let me look up this Dell controller.
