[Engadget]Toyota to unveil its all-electric concept...

...not exactly forthcoming with details.

Among the small clutch of green autos on view at the Detroit auto show early next year, Toyota will be debuting an as-yet-unnamed all electric car concept. This is meant to demonstrate the company's commitment to electric, a move which only makes sense, seeing as the whole "peak oil" thing is pretty much destined to make the gas guzzler obsolete. Still, the car arrives without much fanfare or details -- all we really know is that it's all electric and that it's smaller than a Prius. This comes after the Japanese automaker's push into electric fuel cell development and their stated intention to have an EV on the market alongside the next gen Prius hybrid in 2010. Of course, we all thought we'd have flying cars by 2010, but the industry's inability to produce a robust all-electric motor has certainly put the kibosh on that once great dream.

I hope this "electric" car is powered by hydrogen fuel cells. Otherwise they are just wasting their time and resources.

I'm sorry but why do they find the need to make electric vehicles so ugly? The Tesla is great looking, granted, but come on...

Because when you drive an electric car you need to be noticed.

It's like when celebrities make Anonymous donations to charities, and make sure the press are there.

Sorry i'm kindof going OT. Hydrogen is the future, electric cars aren't as "green" as people think.

Q) How do you make electricity (for the most part)?
A) Burning Fossil Fuels

Q) How do you make Hydrogen?
A) You don't, you just separate it from whatever it has binded to.

Why do you say that? Hydrogen is far more expensive to produce (than just about any other fuel). It takes HUGE amounts of electricity to produce a small amount of hydrogen. In a decade (hopefully) with new technology, it will be cheaper, but until then 'lectric is the way to go...

EDIT:

A) You burn a large amount of fossil fuels to create electricity to unbind a small amount of hydrogen.

I think instead of bailing out the auto industry, they should just give the 15 billion to tesla.

Breaking molecular bonds requires....guess what?.... energy. It has to come from somewhere. Care to guess from whence it comes, brainiac?

We need electric cars and trucks and transportation vehicles, yes the electricity is made by burning fossil fuels like coal, but it would be easier to make the cars electric and then come up with a green and clean electricity making power plant of some sort

EDIT: most electric cars dont look that good

Ugh, and I thought that the Prius was ugly! Yay Toyota, revolutionize the car industry so only BLIND people can stand to drive! That'll surely do the world some good.

Truthfully now, though, I have gotten the truck bug (seems that it happens to all guys at one time or another in their life) but I really think that a name like "Moving Speed Bump" would fit that poor little thing better.

But hey, at least they're working into the electrically powered car idea, although I'm sure the greenies are going to find something (the children that they employ to build them perhaps, hah!) to rain on the parade.

That wouldn't be an "electric" car then, smart guy. It'd be a "fuel cell" (although to be perfectly honest they SHOULD call it a "H fuel cell" car, but that's splitting hairs) car. Get with the buzz words!

Also, what's REALLY funny is that people like you are so mentally controlled that you don't understand that hydrogen is a less-efficient fuel source. You see one show on the TV, and you INSTANTLY become a hydrogen expert!

In fifty years, after they have clean-hydrogen (farms for the stuff using algae or whatever people far smarter than the two of us can figure out) and we aren't wasting MASSIVE amounts of energy to produce such a small amount of the gas, THEN we can talk about this once more.

not environmentally friendly till we switch to full nuclear power wherever solar/wind/water energy cant be generated.
